Ford Laser (KH), 1991 The KH was released in October 1991 as a mild refresh of the KF, changes limited mostly to the headlight/grille and rear tailgate garnish. Seen here in 1.8 "S" trim, powered by the 16V Mazda B8 engine, and featuring a number of cosmetic enhancements - notably the two-tone paint treatment and TX3 alloy wheels. The KH would end production in September 1994 as the last Australian-built Laser, following the closure of Ford's Homebush plant in Sydney's inner west. Ford Laser Lynx (KJ), October 1994-December 1996. The Lynx was the three-door hatch variant in the new fully-imported KJ Laser range of late 1994. Distinctive "Kamm-back" styling was paired with four-wheel disc brakes and Mazda's BP twin-cam 1.8 litre four-pot, good for around 92kW or so. The styling proved a bit too "out there", particularly when this power plant was also available in the much more conventionally-styled sedan and 5-door hatch. Ford Laser TX3 Turbo 4WD (KF), 1990 Ford released a new KF Laser in March 1990, and positioned at the top of the range was the TX3. Like the KE before, it came as 2WD, 2WD Turbo and 4WD Turbo models. Power came from the twin-cam 1.8 Mazda BP (non-turbo) or BPT (turbo/intercooled). Mazda Familia (BD), 1980 Also known as the 323 or the GLC, the Familia was a name well known (familiar?😂) in Mazda parlance, having been in use since 1963. The fourth generation which debuted in 1980 put Mazda firmly on the world stage. The BD Familia was developed in partnership with Ford, and was a groundbreaking design for the Japanese manufacturer. It also provided the basis for the Ford Laser, as a replacement for the ageing rear-wheel drive Escort was required. Ford of Australia had looked to European and North American versions of the new front-wheel drive Escort (project "Erika"), but the new Mazda was deemed much more viable. It was sold outside Japan as the 323, and in North America it was known as the GLC (Great Little Car. @fordaustralia Ford Laser TX3 (KE), October 1987-March 1990. Based on the Mazda 323/Familia (which was also sold here in Australia), the KE was the third iteration of the popular Laser, which first appeared in 1981. The flagship of the Laser range, the TX3 was available as naturally-aspirated (fitted with the Mazda B6 SOHC 8v 1.6 litre engine) or turbocharged (with the Mazda B6T DOHC 16v 1.6 litre engine).
