F A V O U R I T E Today I am starting the #21daysinmyartworld challenge with @taraleaver. The prompt for Day 1 is ‘Favourite Painting’. It is tricky to pick a favourite painting as I spend such long periods of time painting each piece I make, by the end I tend to feel quite attached to them. I chose this painting because it was quite a pivotal turning point in my work. I made it back in February last year. I was co-curating an exhibition and I was also exhibiting in it. During this time I was focussing a lot of my energy on getting the show up and running and neglected to allocate plenty of time to these two pieces. When I sat down to make the work they just flowed so naturally and came together much better than I had anticipated. I was reading a book called The New North: The World in 2050 at the time and it really inspired this painting. It is a reflection on how our world is becoming more and more urban, how cities are getting larger and how the rural areas are slowly diminishing. It’s called Urban, Richer, Greyer and I used a grey slate that I foraged in the Isle of Mull to create the grey pigment used in this piece of work. The paint is also one of my favourites I have made too, and I have made over 80 individual paints now! (I wish I had collected more grey slate so I could have made more of this paint.) Although my paintings are quite abstract they always have a meaning behind them, the environment and our planet feature heavily in my ideas and often without describing them in more detail you might never get to the meaning behind them. What were your first thoughts on this piece? Now you know some of the back story does it make you feel differently about the piece, good or bad? I would love to hear your thoughts. This piece sold shortly after the exhibition, just as we went into our first lockdown in March!
