So someone has once said to me that fat people can’t be oppressed because fat people can become thin.
And I’d like to address this once more because this was also the only reason why I too didn’t consider fat people oppressed at first (even though I acknowledged that fat people are treated so badly to the point where we are subhuman)
Oppression doesn’t have the requirement that someone has to experience oppression for their whole life for something to be oppression.
No one would argue that islamophobia doesn’t exist just because a person can change their faith, that would be stupid. We wouldn’t argue that a disabled person has never felt disableism if they went through a magic recovery and became non-disabled one day. We wouldn’t say that people who previously identified as queer but later realized they weren’t queer, didn’t experience queerphobia.
Even if every single fat person became thin one day, it doesn’t mean we were never oppressed. There’s no clause in oppression that makes it so you have to forever be oppressed for it to be oppression.
And we know that most fat people don’t even become thin, ever, period. So if this is your only excuse for why fat people aren’t oppressed, you’re wrong
