i think i got to pointers and went nah im ok i dont need to learn c. that was like 4 years ago when i was way dumber so maybe i could do it now.
this is the exact same thing that happened to me. as soon as i got to pointers i was like haha nahhhh and went back to game maker. right now i'm really really really trying to stick to it. just forcing myself every day to get past the boring stuff. fortunately, c itself is not a big language. the book i'm reading called the c primer plus 6th edition (not to be confused with the c++ primer) which my uncle recommended to me personally really makes things easier. i was reading k&r's ansi c 2nd edition book and it was a bit less palatable because at least this one is seemingly written from the perspective of a student. they also iterate over points they've made before a bit more making it easier to remember all the nuances and gotchas.
i find that finding a project written in c or c++ that you're very passionate about and thinking about the prospect of contributing to the project with your own code is a huge motivator, if you wanna get specific. i think that's what triggered that drive in me to just pick up the language all of a sudden and persist longer than i have before. i've been constantly reminding myself of my ultimate goal and all the times i said "god damn it i knew i should've learned c a long time ago" they seem to help a whole lot heheh

i need to learn c eventually but im so comfortable with higher level languages that i think it would frustrate me
i wish i was more experienced so i could offer more insight but all i have to say is c is a big fussy baby and it takes a while to learn how to get it to stop crying but once you do you will have all the power in the world in your metaphorical hands

i got a chromebook a few weeks ago and ive got debian in a chroot for programming
it looks fun & neat to do, though i'm thinking of getting a laptop as a replacement for the one i spilled isopropyl alcohol on. as silly and picky as it sounds, i'm looking more towards another windows laptop since i tend not to ever screw up those installations for years and years and years whereas with debian i still, to this day, tend to fudge a very dangerous "mv" command (i usually use "cp" and then "rm" afterwards to prevent this from happening but sometimes i just gotta take risks) and end up wrecking things which i won't want to deal with if i'm travelling.
that being said, however, if i'm careful, and i get a chromebook, it'll end up saving me around $300 or $400 and i'll get all the fun and excitement of a little experimentation laptop.
