DC’s 2024 Black History Month anthology, DC Power, will arrive in stores on Jan. 30 and will feature a new story by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell, which will showcase the first meeting of Green Lanterns Sojourner “Jo” Mullein, from their award-winning Far Sector comic, and John Stewart. Here's a preview.
joke that's going to make sense to 5 ppl on this earth
Now this might sound like an odd thing to say, but I don’t think there’s ever been a true master of the Orange Lantern
Yes, Larfleeze has wielded it for centuries and Kyle had to learn how to harness that aspect of the Emotional Spectrum to become the White Lantern. But the latter rarely ever tapped into Avarice after that, and the former isn’t so much in control of the Orange as it is in control of him
Y’know who I think could conquer the Orange Lantern tho?
Sojourner "Jo" Mullein
Far Sector issue #5
The Orange Light is not a power that can be kept at arm's length. To truly wield it, one must embrace it fully. And this is where Jo stands out amongst the rest. Far Sector makes it abundantly clear that Jo's motivations are driven by Hunger.
Hunger for a more equal society. Hunger for a better world. It is that hunger that drove Jo to join the Army and the NYPD. Some might call it idealism, or naivete. But I don't believe Jo was unaware of what those organizations have done, what they represent or how much blood stains them.
Because make no mistake, Jo is smart. Smart enough to be accepted into one of the most prestigious institutions of learning on the planet. Smart enough that she had to have known how deep corruption runs in the American police system. Yet she threw herself into it nonetheless because her hunger to change that outweighed all else.
Some might call that idealism. I disagree. Jo is the kind of person who is unafraid to get her hands dirty if it means that it has even the slightest chance of making the world a better place.
Far Sector issue #7
Nemosyne specifically sought Jo out because her willpower is endurance personified. It may not be as dramatic as Hal or John constantly pushing past limitations thought absolute, but it is a stubborn, deep-rooted wellspring of strength that does not falter. And I believe that is the kind of willpower that is required to withstand the temptations of Avarice
And this is why I know Jo could master the Orange Light if she tried. Where others may hesitate, either afraid that they will lose themselves or reluctant to approach such a corrupting force, Jo Mullein will not falter. She knows that power is but a tool that is defined by the actions of those who use it. She is not afraid to embrace her desires, her hunger for a world where everyone is equal. That unquenchable fire is what kept Jo going during that long year at the edge of the universe. It is what drew a Guardian of the Universe to her, even at her lowest moment.
Orange is strongest as a driving force, and Jo is the kind of crazy bitch who can look at it and say "I decide the direction."
On top of all that it would a thematic triumph for Jo to be able to bend Avarice to her will. Twice she's tried and failed to make a difference within a corrupt organization from the inside out. But through sheer idealism and enduring will, she conquers and redeems the most insidious power in the entire Emotional Spectrum and turns it into a force for good? Poetry
