Today's #womenshistorymonth love goes to the Women whose intellectual and civic mindedness helped shape me. These Intellectual titans have given me context on black female power, community responsibility, self love, accountability, and the reality of racial constraints around life, work, love, and self esteem. Living abroad these last 15 years has given me a rebirth of character. Being the only black American in most situations has been enlightenment personified. I really have been challenged to represent, dispel, and frankly educate many on the realities of living in my lush golden brown body. I'm grateful these Elders left instruction and encouragement. I spend a lot of time asking for things from simple basics like shampoos that won't damage my hair, to pop culture media like magazines that support positive black female beauty, that won't damage my soul. I've become exhausted trying to explain gerrymandering, capitalism/commerce, and my patriotism to my battered but beautiful country. These women give me the opportunity to face this onslaught and triumph, but better yet, gift me the language to impart the truth and illuminate.
