A Taste Of Hazel Chapter 11 (A Zootopia fan-story)
Alison arrived home from school she had her backpack over her should and looked exhausted she had been teased relentlessly, she wanted so badly to punch the dickens out of the other kids, but knew deep down that would not help.
âHey sweetieâ called a voice from the couch.
Alison hadnât even seen Jack sitting on the couch.
âHey dadâ
âHi sweetheart, how was your day?â
Alison smiled brightly âWe had the whole last class was art and it was great, I drew a foxâ
Alison pulled out her book and showed Jack the picture. He didnât move from the couch but held a paw out and took the book looking over the picture.
Itâs beautiful, âwho is it?â
âThe neighbour, I think she is very pretty!â
Jack knew who Alison spoke of; she was speaking of Ms Raine, the young fox who lived in the penthouse across from Jacks penthouse suite.
âCan I go show her?â
Asked Alison, Jack pursed his lips, he hated Alisonâs fascination with other foxes, and it made him feel bad, but mainly uncomfortable.
âSureâ he said through strain âjust be home before mom gets home okay?â
Alison did a 180 degree turn and went to go to the neighbourâs house when she paused under the doorframe.
âDad?â
Jack who had gone back to watching television hit the mute button.
âYeah?â
âWhat are you doing home?â
Jack looked blankly at the television âJust sick sweetheartâ.
âOhâŠokay, Iâll be back soonâ.
Alison shut the door and Jack waited till her heard her paw steps disappear before reaching between the couch and pulling out a bottle of scotch and his pills.
âThis is getting out of handâ he sighed throwing back three of the pills, as his eyes stayed poised on the dark figure sitting in the corner of the room rocking back and forth crying.
Alison tapped gently at the door to Ms.Raineâs penthouse suite.
âHello Ms.Raine?â
âHello?â choked a voice from the other side of the door; the voice was soft but sad.
âHey Ms Raine, itâs me Alisonâ.
âOh hi sweetie, what can I do for you?â
The door cracked a little and Miss Raines hazel eye peered out.
âI drew you a picture!â Alison confirmed with a gleeful smile holding up the picture.
âOh sweetie thatâs beautiful, is that youâ she breathed out, sounding to Alison as though she was out of breath.
âNoâŠItâs you!â explained Alison holding picture up for Ms Raine to take.
âAw thank youâ she exclaimed reaching a shaky paw out to take the picture from Alison, her paw however was shaking like mad.
âAre you okay Ms Raine?â quizzed Alison.
âYeah, Iâve just got a temperature and havenât been feeling too well, but itâs okay, its normalâŠyouâll understand when your older sweetheart. Ide invite you in but I donât think I can today, maybe another night you can come over and we can watch a Fox tales?â
Alisonâs face lit up with excitement.
âWell I hope you get betterâ comforted Alison.
âI think Iâll be much better soon enoughâ said Ms Raine with a bright fangy smile.
Nick was sharply woken by the god awful sound of his watch blaring in his ear; his sight was blurry as he tried to push himself up, his arms felt like paper that folded beneath his own weight.
âWhat? Are you kidding me?â
Nicks rest had barely recuperated him and he had 30 minutes to get dressed and get down stairs for his first shift.
He tried to sit up but his whole body seemed to resist him.
âCome on Nick, enough alreadyâ he spoke to himself, bashful that he was feeling this way, never having felt anything like this.
Each second the image of the Vixen in his mind reminding him why his body was completely drained.
It took Nick 12 minutes to drag himself from the floor and into the bathroom where he stared at himself in the mirror, trying his hardest to give himself a pep talk, grasping each side of the basin with as much force as he could muster.
âSheâs just a Vixen, youâve seen plenty before, this one is no different, sheâs justâŠâ he paused a moment as his thoughts took over thinking of other Vixens he had fancied and noticing none of them came close to this fox. âSheâs justâŠundyingly beautiful and kindâ he finished in a defeated whisper.
Nick sluggishly walked into his living room, snatching his shirt off the floor and slowly buttoning it up and rolling up the sleeves. He could hear the crowd grown downstairs, he knew he should be nervous but was too tired to think straight.
He grabbed the aftershave off the small bedside table and sprayed around his scruff twice.
He then walked to the mirror in the bathroom; he took a deep breath, poked his chest out and smiled.
âNicholas Piberius Wildeâ he exclaimed to himself smiling brightly extending his paw out as if he were to shake someoneâs paw, his paw trembled with an uncontrollable force.
He pulled is paw back placing on in the other and rubbing them together as if that would sooth his tremor, however it did nothing.
Nick breathed out âWell, here goes nothingâ
Nick got down stairs spot on time, the place was busy but, relaxing, he felt as though all eyes were on him, and at the same time calm; every animal here was simply relaxed having a nice dinner or laughing around a table that had one too many beers balancing atop it.
âHey Nickie, sweetieâ.
âHey Pricilla, where do you want me?â asked Nick wondering where to start and feeling a little out of place.
âWell Sarah is behind the bar serving if you wanna start cleaning the tables and throwing out those bottlesâ she shouted over the sound of the jukebox starting up.
Nick smiled and nodded turning to catch Sarahâs eye, giving her a greeting nod, she was a deer in her early twenties with a cock sure smile, she had freckles and dressed in very casual attire and worked the bar like she lived there, knowing where everything was, she flung her head back reciprocating Nicks gesture, Nick could tell she must have worked here a long time as she knew everyoneâs order before they even placed it. Â
Nick turned and made his way table to the first table the people continuing their conversation as if Nick werenât even there only turning when he had the last bottle in paw to thank him for cleaning the table, the second table and third table was much the same, then Nick came to the table that had the most bottles on it, the one that looked as though it was about to overflow; he grabbed an empty glass and some at the table turned and sneered when they saw the fox only to lighten up and join him in their conversations when he gave them a reassuring and shy smile which was mirrored by Pricilla shooting them a stare as she walked by, obviously the rowdy ones were regulars and knew Pricillaâs stance on treating other with respect.
âNicholas but people call me Nickâ explained Nick answering ones question while still collecting their empty bottles.
He reached out grabbing a half full bottle while talking and a tiny paw grabbed his âhey there fella donât be to overzealous, thatâs not finished yetâ pointed out the beaver with a chuckle.
Nick also chuckled letting go of the bear and moving instead to stacking up the empty glasses that remained. It took Nick two trips to get their table clear,
âDonât forget to wipe down the table and put down coaster newbieâ explained the deer who walked past him with a tied-up bin bag
âCoasters?â asked Nick unsure as to where they were located.
The deer simply pointed to a marble bench top that led toward the kitchen, which atop sat a stack of fresh coasters, Sarah manoeuvred past Nick, making her way to the back door to take out the trash.
Nick grabbed the coasters and made his way to the sink where he found the cleaning spray for the tables and a clean cloth; he tucked the cloth into his belt and hung the spray by the nozzle from his pants pocket.
Nick returned to the rowdy table; he sprayed his cloth wiping the sticky spilt beer from their table top and threw down several coasters from in his pocket.
âThanks Slick Nickâ laughed a leopard slapping Nick encouragingly on the back .
Nick swayed with the hit and went to speak but instead just smiled, nodded and moved to the next table, then the next and the next when he was suddenly interrupted.
âNick!â yelled a voice; he looked to the back door to see Sarah standing there an aggravated look on her face, her paw gesturing to the bar.
Nick just stood confused
âWhen one of us goes somewhere the others got to watch the barâ she called out rolling her eyes and storming over to the bar to serve the queue of various mammals.
Nick fumbled and with haste nervously made his way to the bar
âHi, what can I get you?â he asked the first animal in front of him
âI already got him newbieâ called Sarah, focusing on punching the order into the til and not even looking up to address Nick.
âWhat can I get you sir; he asked sliding to the next animal.
âHey I was firstâ called out a customer to the left.
âSorry, what can I get you?â Nick asked moving to the customer that had called out.
âTwo scotch on ice, 2 jerry lagers and one of theseâ explained the customer holding up the cocktails menu and pointing to one.
âCold never bothered me anywayâ read Nick out loud revising the name of the drink âon itâ He confirmed turning to the bench of alcohols and glasses behind him, and suddenly his confidence became staggered, it was like a maze to him, everything looked the same and he could only hear the yelling of the customers behind him and to make it worse the images of the Vixen seemed to only get more progressive the longer he was awake.
Nick fumbled and dropped glasses and took more than twice as long to make the drinks as Sarah, he handed back incorrect change and forgot the ice in one of the scotches.
But after 17 minutes he had finally served his first customer. He moved down the bar asking the next customer, who, to Nicks surprise seemed to be the last one there.
âSorry fox, the lady already got my drinkâ he confirmed reaching over and taking a drink from Sarah who passed it over Nicks shoulder. The customer raising his glass to her in thanks and her responding with a glinted wink.
There was silence as she waited for the bar to be completely clear before she threw = a tea towel over her shoulder crossing her arm and tapping her hoof.
âListen Newbie, rule one of this bar, there is always someone hereâ she explained uncrossing her arms to point to where Nick and her stood behind the bar.
âAlwaysâŠgot it?â
Nick nodded he could feel his body shaking.
Sarah raised an eyebrow, her eyes seeing the shake in Nick, Had she gone to far? She thought to herself.
âYou donât look so good?â she confirmed suddenly âare you okay?â
Nick didnât reply he simply nodded.
Sarah rolled her eyes realising she was being a little rough on the new guy, she tapped Nick on the shoulder.
âHey donât worry, Iâm just a little stressed tonight okay? Just relax, and pay attention youâll be alrightâ.
Nick looked up and smiled at her âwhat do I do next?â he asked.
Sarah smiled âthe best job there isâ.
Nick was in the bathroom sliding the mop backwards and forwards the bathroom was in shambles and someone was on the toilet with a symphony going.
âGreeeaatâ he explained as he held his breath slopping the mop back and forth as quick as he could.
Nick was minding his own business when two Coyotes walked into the bathroom standing next to one another by the troth.
âYeah so Cory might have us a new job⊠two copsâ He whispered leaning over into his friend ear who pushed him back and gestured his eyes back to Nick.
âWhat him? Hey janitor, youâre not eavesdropping are you?â
Nick who was nervous he may get caught out simply shook his head and continued to mop.
âYeah I didnât think soâ laughed the Coyote nudging his friend âtold yaâ.
The two finished washed their paws and towelled them and threw the towels on the floor in front of Nick, who starred at them as he grudgingly bent over to pick them up.
âNot your issue anymore NickâŠhead downâŠâ he convinced himself trying not to think of what the two Coyotes had been talking about while taking a leak.
Nick got back to the bar and Sarah was simply towling it off and checking the pressure of the taps.
Nick strolled up next to her, âneed any help?â he offered
âNo, but you can serve the customer waitingâ
Nick turned âoh sorr-âHe began until he saw who it was.
âHello Nickâ spoke a she wolf on the other side of the counter âNice earring barkeepâ she giggled.
âHiâŠâ said Nick his earlier confusion coming back like a wave.
âCan I please get -âshe asked while her seductive eyes danced over Nick and simply fell off him, his minds only thought however was the eyes of the unknown vixen.
âA water with iceâ.
âComing right upâ Nick walked over to the bar, his eyes however were watching the she wolf from the reflection in the tiles, the stance, the gaze, he couldnât be wrong.
He scooped ice into the glass and put the glass under the tap of water turning it and placing it down in front of the she wolf.
âThanks stud, how much is that?â
âWaters freeâ confirmed Sarah, intervening without realising, what Nick knew was so obvious; the she-wolf was playing games. Â
â$5.00â confirmed Nick ignoring Sarah, unable to help himself from playing the game back. His years in the ZPD, screaming for him to confirm what he already knew to be true.
Sarah stopped wiping the table and stood chest to chest with Nick trying to grab his attention âNo newbie water is free to customersâ Nick moved his head to see past her not wanting to break eye contact with the wolf.
Nick knew the game, intimidation, seduction, information and resolutionâŠhe had seen it played much better than the she wolf was playing, he had been on the receiving end and learnt what it was and how it looked, and Nick never forgot a lesson learnt in pain.
The she-wolf smirk deepened âOkay slick, $5.00â the she-wolf opened her purse and pulled out a 5 handing it to Nick who took it and held it.
Sarah, turned back to the she-wolf whose eyes were locked with Nicks, Sarah looked at her for a moment then at the look plastered on Nicks face and realised something was not right
âWhatâs the catch?â asked Nick
âWhat about a kiss?â
âNot happeningâ responded Nick almost robotically, his hair standing on edge as if the question offended him, his mind going straight to the vixen, right to her defence as if kissing this wolf would be a betrayal on her.
The wolf sighed âWell then I guess Iâll be going home alone tonight after allâ.
Nick needed answers and as the she wolf walked away he knew what to do.
He paused a moment thinking of whether or not this would help his situation with Pricilla, but he needed to know, he needed to verify what he knew so obviously.
Nick took a deep breath and barked as loud as he could âGUN!â he shouted.
Everyone dropped to the floor, cries of fear exiting their mouths and muzzles.
However due to years of training, the wolf had dropped the glass and in one motion held a handgun in her paws; pulled from her purse. She scanned the room for the perp with the gun; her stance typical of an operative, when there was no one else except her with a gun, she realised Wilde had gotten the better of her.
She was looking around bashfully when she gently placed her firearm into her side holster turning back to Nick who wore a smug grin.
âYouâre a copâ chuckled Nick unenthused, unfolding his arms and pointing at her. âI saw the firearm from the get goâ.
âGod damn itâ muttered the she-wolf to herself.
âNot too good at the cop game are you?â confirmed Nick scrunching up the five and throwing it on the bar.
The wolf stalked forward snatching the five dollars shoving it into her purse âIâm not the first officer to be tricked though, am I Officer Wildeâ
Nick knew she must have been speaking of the deception of Judy and Jack and simply nodded in agreement, everyone who had a badge had known about his decimation. He finished with a simple sentence; âI am no officerâŠâ
Pricilla was just behind Nick and grabbed his attention.
âWhatâs going on Nickie?â she asked nervously, phone in her hand ready to call the police
Nick smiled at Pricilla, âsorry, just a misunderstanding, this is officerâŠ-â
âSparrow, Violet Sparrowâ exclaimed the wolf putting a paw out to Nick, who grasped it and shook once.
Sarah was just behind Nick, pushing herself up against the wall as close as she could, she had never seen a gun before and her heart was racing, Nick could hear it and he turned.
âRelax, sheâs a police officer-âcomforted Nick before his attention returned to Violet â⊠soâŠWhat do you want? Jack send you? Keep an eye on me?â
While her and Nicks spoke Nick saw the two Coyotes from earlier nudge one another and make haste for the door, looking back every step or so to make sure their withdraw had not grabbed unwanted attention.
Violet laughed into the back of her paw throwing her head back âI donât answer to that puny little runt, Iâm in the K-9 division, we deal with, bigger issuesâŠâ
âSuch as?â
The wolf walked forward and pinched Nickâs cheeks âIf I told you that good looking, Iâd have to kill youâ she spoke through pursed lips, teasing Nick playfully.
Nick pulled his cheeks from her clutches âIâve had enough of copsâŠI think you should leaveâ
âIâm not the enemy Nickie boyâ explained the wolf over her shoulder as she went to leave.
âYeah Ive heard that one beforeâ he gnashed. âThen what are youâ
The wolf did a 180 degrees turn and walked over to the bar leaning over and whispered into Nicks ear- âundercoverâ
The words itself burnt Nick to the core Nicks thoughts went into overdrive,â Undercover, just like her, just like him, a liar in disguise a two face, traitorous, sly! Mother fu-â.
Nick hadnât realised but his muzzle was gently pulling back to expose his canines in an aggressive manner âSettle down Vulpes, Iâm just playingâ
Nick didnât respond; he just starred at her.
She gently pulled her head back and her ears dropped to the side in sadness, she had never seen someone look at her the way Nick starred at her, with undeniable hatred and fury.
She went to speak, when a throat filled rumble left Nicks throat and without understanding or another words, she fluster turned and walked out.
There seemed, in Nicks mind at least, to be several hours of silence.
âPsstâ called Pricilla to grab Nickâs attention; who seemed to be starring off into a very bad dimension full of pain, suffering and underlying rage.
Nick turn to her rigidly to see what she wanted and she gently placed her hands either side of her mouth gesturing for Nick to drop the snarl and close his mouth and hide his teeth, thatâs when he noticed every set of eyes in the place where on him.
Nick turned his snarl into a genuine yet awkward smile moving as slow as possible as if people couldnât see him do it. He stood smiling at everyone who made eye contact, patiently waited for the crowd in the pub to return to talking and eating; when they did he made a direct line over to Pricilla.
He huffed out a deep breath, reached deep into his pocket, fumbled around before he grabbed the key to his room from his pocket holding it out in an open palm.
âIâm sorryâ he apologised, âI assume you would like me to leaveâ.
Pricilla looked at the room key being held out to her and was instantly offended, her face screwing up in disbelief at Nicks action, she grabbed Nickies paw and folded his hand into a fist, making him grasp the keys, her eyes locked with him in an annoyed way, but annoyed that he would ever assume she would leave him on the streets over a small misunderstanding; not that there had been an altercation on his first night.
âDos tables aint gunna get clean if you keep standin ere checking me out Nickieâ she explained shoving his chest playfully, her eyes softening; worried her annoyed look may scare Nick.
Nick breathed out, âhow stupid can I beâ he thought; his eyes praised Pricilla, she never got mad at Nick, she simply fought with all her strength to show that someone gave a shit.
The night died down and the incident with Violet had left Nicks mind, replaced only by the exhausting thoughts of his mystery Vixen.
Nick had been at the biggest table towelling the same spot in a circular motion for the last 15 minutes.
âHey Newbieâ called Sarah, placing down the bins she was taking out to empty, packed to the brim with bottles.
âyeah?â replied Nick lifting an ear to show he was listening and ceasing his methodic wiping of the table to give her his full attention.
âYou did good tonightâŠscarred some of the patrons, but you needa be a little scary to work in places like disâ
Nick smirked he had come to notice that every now and again when Sarah spoke, there was a slip of Pricillaâs accent that would mix in, and Nick also noticed that Sarah didnât notice she did this.
âSo when is clock off time?â
âWhy you tired?â
âAll damn dayâ explained Nick turning back to his table and continuing to do small circles with his cloth.
âBut youâre a fox, you should be wide awakeâ.
âItâs complicatedâ huffed Nick, who now had such little energy; he couldnât even do the circles on the table and simply leaned on it to catch his breath.
âYeah well, you better get use to this night shift thing, otherwise da place-le eat you aliveâ explained Sarah, heaving up the heavy bins full of glass bottles and continuing on her way to empty them into the industrial bin located near the car park.
Nick was in his own world when he felt a Pricillaâs hand land on his shoulder.
âHey Nickie, you look bushedâ
Nick chuckled with a nod âyeahâ
Pricilla began wiping down tables and they worked side by side while talking.
âYeah, Nightshift is hard to begin wit, but youâll pick it up soon enough sugar, donât even fretâ.
Nick smiled at her as he forced his body one aching moment after the other to continue to clean.
The night came to a close and Nick could barely keep his eyes open and his knees had a subtle shake to them.
Pricilla was turning the lights off and collecting the til to count while she spoke out to Nickie and Sarah who were both walking away from the time on machine.
âSo Sarah, Iâll see you tonight, Nickie youâll be in on Wednesday and Friday, Friday is karaoke so be prepared for your ears ta hurt at de end o da night okay?â
Nick placed his paw to the side of his brow and threw a fake salute Pricillaâs way before making his way to the staircase to get to his room.
Sarah however turned to Pricilla with a scoff- âHey why does the newbie get a few days off?â interrupted Sarah, feeling hard done by.
âBecause heâs got a girl to get with, heâs useless until that happensâ.
Nick who was heading back to his room not really listening suddenly realised what Pricilla just said and jumped out of his skin, as the words left Pricillaâs mouth; he turned ridigidly, riddled with embarrassment.
âWhat?â gulped Nick hoping her heard wrong.
âAh come on Nickie, its plain as day you havin one o ya âfox momentââ chuckled Pricilla, emphasising âfox momentsâ with her fingers before leaning smugly on the counter and sending Nick a playful, yet teasing grin.
Nick slapped his paw to his face, dragging it down and off his chin as though that would get rid of his embarrassment; he was too tired to be dealing with this and simply mumbled to himself.
âOh so dats why heâs so tiredâ interjected Sarah realising why the nocturnal fox was having a hard time keeping up and staying focused.
Her and Pricilla breaking into a conversation about Nick and foxes without him being invited in for his two cents worth and so he grudgingly ignored them heading to his room; too exhausted to even think of how to be witty. Â Nick reached his room opened the door and fell face first dead to the world as the sun rose on Sunday morning 06:30 to gently warm his fur as he curled into a ball his tail shading his eyes.
Jack awoke the early Sunday morning, he rolled his sleeves up as he packed his bag for work, he didnât know what weighed more; his guilt that had someone spiralled so out of control it was eating him like a plague from the inside out, or the bags under his eyes from not stop alcohol, self medication and lack of sleep. He shifted past the papers, fingerprints and a small notebook, and underneath all that a medium size flask full of alcohol he took it out and took a swig, no change to the smell of stale spirit on his breath.
âYouâre no better than one Tyrone Valentine Wilde, Chief Savageâ.
Jack looked to his right to see the lumbering giant figure of Bogo leaning on his door frame dark and ominous.
âThe shirt really suits you SavageâŠâ complimented Bogo, with a hint of malice, looking Jack up and down.
Jack looked down to the chief badge hanging leisurely from his chest.
âHe slept with my wifeâ explain Jack.
âHe slept with someone he loved, he slept with a lie, what did you do to himâ
Jack turned with fury in his eyes pointing a finger âI-â
However the apparition had vanished and his paw gently dropped to his side as he spoke to himself.
â-IâŠI bashed him, I degraded him, I broke him into pieces, I took his childâŠand for what? For the horrors his father committed⊠AlisonâŠIâŠâ Jack couldnât bear the words coming from his mouth and so drank them down until the flask was empty, the acidic, burning liquor fighting to come up and Jack wrestling to keep it down.
Jack opened the door and left, he stopped in the staircase slapping his forehead re opening the door, the invitation to Judyâs party awaiting him, but he walked straight past them and over to the liquor cabinet, grabbed a bottle of scotch topping up his flask he was about out the door, when he noticed the invitation from the corner of his eye, he grabbed the invitations for Mariaâs party and placed them in his back pocket.
Checked his top pocket for his keys and his back pocket for his wallet before heading down the elevator to his car spot in the basement.
Jack got to the ZPD, it was empty, he turned all the lights on and made his way to Clawhauserâs desk placing the invitation in his pigeon hole with a note
âHand these out, keep it discreteâ.
Jack sluggishly made his way to the office he opened the door and reached his paw in turning the lights on, the bright lights burning his alcohol dried eyes, everything was the same as always, all things sitting in the same spot, he picked up the newspaper that had been placed at the front of his door earlier and read the front page. Something was off, the front page story was of a fox, the last thing he wanted to read about, however he knew the fox, Roxy, she had been involved a year ago with Tyroneâs plot, a sassy young thing sentenced to several years imprisonment, however it looked like her sentence was cut short, she had been found hanging in her cell.
Jack re read the article several times, something wasnât right, Jack booted up his computer
His paws used great haste to open up the ZPD data base; he logged in with his username and password and went to records typing in the name of the now dead Vixen.
He read in silence for quite some time, he didnât know what he was looking for, but he knew there was something.
Thatâs when he found her military background; she had been in foreign prisons and even military detention centres.
He read the paper again, supposedly she hung herself; that couldnât be, it didnât make sense.
She had been in many wars and imprisoned in tougher prisons around the globe then the ones they have in Zootopia; ZT prison would be walk in the part, childâs play to a veteran with her expertise.
Jack soon realised he had been trying to make a connection between the two for over an hour; he could hear the voices in the ZPD growing louder as more officers came in to start shift. A small soft tap at the door grabbed his attention as he looked over his computer.
âCome inâ he called.
The door cracked open ad Maria stood in the doorway.
âHey chiefâ she said biting her lip âhard at work?â
Jacks shoulders that were stiff and unyielding slowly relaxed as he softly sat back in his seat âGood Morning officer Savage what can I do for youâ.
Maria turned and shut the door hoping her way over to Savage going past his desk and to the foot of his chair, he went to speak when Maria grabbed his tie pulling him down and locking tongue with him. It took Jack of guard but he returned it passionately.
âI did that to her to you knowâ spoke Nicks voice and instantly savage pulled from Maria, his paws in small fists so tight they were about to burst at the seams. His eyes directly averting from Maria to the computer on his desk.
âWhatâs wrong?â asked Maria, wondering why Jack had pulled away so quickly, just as they were getting into it.
âNot at work Mariaâ he breathed out his eyes locked with his computer.
âWe use toâ argued Maria playfully, her jestful tone not return in kind when Jack answered darkly with âWell not anymoreâ.
âOh, okay, sorryâ there was an awkward silence, Maria nervous she had done something wrong and so she pried âIs everything okay Jack?â
Jack whose face turned to anger sighed and took a breath calming himself âIâve, just been busy. Sorryâ
âThatâs okayâ, responded Maria seeing through Jacks shrug off lie but knowing it would be best to just let it go. Â âDonât burn yourself out, I love youâ she murmured walking over, grabbing his tie and pulling his face down to plant a soft kiss on his cheek.
âI love you to he grumbled as he returned to his investigation, that had someone taken a hold of him, and made him feel uneasy.
Jack was flicking through the paper when he came to another page of a dead fox.
âMariaâ he called just as she was about to leave his office.
She stopped at the door facing jack and raising her ear high in the air to show she was listening.
âWhat was the other fox we arrested when we ran into Tyrone?â
Judy thought for a moment, trying to recall their names and the stack of paperwork they had done more than a year ago.
Jack waited patiently for her to remember; he was sure of the name but needed her to confirm it.
âReeceâ she finally answered âHis name was Reeceâ answered Maria, before leaving to check her case files for new jobs.
Maria left the room and Jack sat back in his chair gob smacked, the 4th page of the same newspaper was a story of a young male fox by the name of Reece he had been found drowned in a dam waterway.
Nick walked out of Frays practice onto the busy zootopian street, he looked down to his paws and the $500.00 + dollars he now held firm in his paws and for the first time in such a while, felt as though he was not alone. He made his way across the street entering the mall and asking a shop front to change one of the notes to smaller change that included money for the pay phone.
The shop keeper changed his notes, but could not get his eyes off the wad of cash carried by a homeless looking fox.
Nick got his change and ran across the road to the pay phones.
The bear that ran the shop Nick had exchanged the money at, picked up his phone as Nick walked away.
âHello, ZPD, whatâs your emergency?â spoke a voice on the other side of the phone.
âYes, I believe I just served a thief at my shop- â
Nick arrived at the phones and gently slid two coins in pulling out the card from his pocket.
â9648 4892 1212 4â he spoke out loud as his claws danced among the dials. The phone rang twice when it was picked up.
âEllo waterin hole tavern, this is Pricillaâ
Nickâs voice choked and he didnât quite know where to start.
âEllo, elloâ
The silence lingered and Pricilla was getting frustrated.
âLook Bobby bulldog, if this is anudda one of ya pranks you can stick it up ya-â
âHelloâ splurted Nick finally.
âOh hello, this is tha waterin hole tavern, how can I help ya?â
âHelloâŠ.Is, is this Pricilla?â Nick slapped his face feeling stupid, realising she literally answered the phone and introduced herself.
âYa huh, whoâs dis?â
âUm, look I donât know if you remember meâŠâ began Nicks rubbing the back of his neck nervously âI came in for a job interview a few years agoâŠI uh⊠A rabbit showed up⊠andâŠâ.
âDa police officaâŠNicky right?â
âYesâŠyes thatâs rightâ he explained gleefully surprised she remembered him.
âHow ya doing Sweetie?â
The question was asked all too often and he knew that it was more a polite rhetorical that didnât need answer. However Pricilla seemed to truly appreciate normality and so Nick answer how best he should.
âNot so goodâ
âOh thatâs no good hun, I just assumed maybe ya go da job at the ZPD when I didnât hear from yaâ.
âNo I never got the job back âaffirmed Wilde.
There was a pause in the conversation and Nick took a deep breath âLook I know it was a year ago that you were hiring, but you know-â
âCome in this afternoon, say bout 5 howâs dat for ya hun?â
âThatâsâŠ.perfectâŠthatâs perfectâŠâ
âOkay sweetie, I gotta go, Iâll see ya at fiveâ.
The phone went dead and Nick simply stood starring at the receiver, a happy feeling deep in his guts, things were going to get better, with Jack no longer around to stomp him out, perhaps he had a chance.
âIâm gunna get my daughter back JACK ASSâ he snarled.
He put the phone down and in the shiny reflection of the phone box he saw two reflections, dressed up in blue; walk up behind him.
He turned to see Chuck and Delgato behind him, Chuck grabbed his by the scruff and pulled him from the phone booth throwing him to the ground and pinning an arm behind his back while chuckling to himself.
âHey, what are you doing?â cried Nick trying hard to pull his paw free.
âNick donât resistâ begged Delgato holding a paw out while talking into his two way.
âWhat? Whatâs this all about?â grunted Nick, listening to Delgatoâs orders; Nick letting his arm go limp.
âLaw and orderâ snickered Chuck in his ear, contorting his arm in such a way that it felt as though he was about to break the bone, and Chucks knee was so deep in Nickâs back he could feel the nerves screaming.
âDelgato?â cried Nick, looking for Delgato to come to his aid and make Chuck less aggressive
Delgato raised his paws, tied by the law due to the call they received.
âNick just, relax your bodyâ he explained.
Chuck went into Nickâs pockets; the first was empty but out of his left pocket Chuck pulled out a wad of cash.
Delgato shut his eyes and sighed.
âOh NickâŠwhere did you get this money?â asked Delgato assuming the worse.
âI got it from a friendâ argued Nick, his eyes pleading with Delgato.
âBullshit you donât have friendsâ growled Chuck pushing his face into the concrete and putting the money into a zip tie evidence bag.
âHey thatâs mineâ yelled Nick trying to stand only to have Chuck push his head into the concrete harder.
Nick cried out in pain as he did so.
âWhereâd you get the money foxâ he shouted in his ear, all the eyes in the street now on Nick and the police, camera phones catching every minute.
âA friend!â cried Nick
Chuck lifted him and slammed him into the ground.
Delgato went to intervene âhey enough-â
âYou want all these people to see that the ZPD stood up for a thiefâ yelled Chuck loud enough to be heard by bystanders; Delgato falling silent, the cameras and crowd making him nervous.
âI said where did you get the money from fox?â growled Chuck again.
Nick was in tears, his shirt was torn and his arms hurt from being knotted behind his back.
âA friend!â he shouted defiantly.
âYou donât have friendsâ repeated Chuck lifting him up to slam him down again.
Nick was in a flurry of confusion but could hear faint fast approaching footsteps, as if urgent, then an all too familiar voice.
âYes he fucking doesâ hissed an infuriated voice.
Nick looked up to see Fangmyer take a stride over him, Delgato went to put his paws on Fangmyer chest to stop his advances, only to have Fangmyer bowl him over, pushing him several feet, Delgato sliding across the ground from the force of the push.
Chuck saw Fangmyer bounding towards him, chuck began stuttered and stammered looking for an excuse, his face was riddled with fear and disbelief, he held his paws up in front of him as if asking Fangmyer to stop, blabbering all sorts of excuses, when they failed he tried to pull the law card on him.
âStand down or ill ââ
Fangmyer simply hissed as loud as he could ignoring every word he drooled, the noise Fangmyer made was spine tingling powerful. He reached Chuck and grabbed him by the scruff lifting him high in the air and punching him square in the face, he then dropped him to his feet and threw a right hook; putting chuck on the ground next to Nick.
Fangmyer straddled him and began to hook in, his eyes had become slits and his throat made a frightful noise.
@articianneÂ
âFangâs stopâ cried Delgato who ran up and tried in vain to pull him off only to be again thrown down by Fangmyerâs enormous size.
Delgato swiftly stood up and pulled out his taser.
âOFF NOW FANGMYER!â he cried holding the air taser in his direction.
Fangmyer stopped for a moment looking over his shoulder at Delgato, Chuck was underneath Fangmyer his paws trying in vain to shield his battered and bruised face; whimpering âStop pleaseâ over and over.
Fangmyer turned back to Chuck; pushing his paws aside and patting down his pockets with his giant paws until he found the bag of Nickâs money, then he pat him down his left side to get the keys to Nickâs cuffs.
Fangmyer stood off Chuck pointing down to him âDonât move, donât fucking move or Iâll be back over you, you little prickâ he warned, the manic violence Fangmyer had spiralled into making his whole body shiver and shake with rage.
Fangâs moved over to Nick placing the money in his pocket and the key in his paw cuffs.
Delgato shook aiming the taser at him
âDonât Fangmyer! Donât unlock those cuffsâ he warmed
Fangmyer; whose eyes returned to normal turned the key, not breaking eye contact with Delgato.
Nick sloppily pushed himself to his feet; helped up by Fangmyer.
âYou want to sit back and watch this prick bully a cripple, bully a friend, then take the shot, but if you donât get me down, I will make you look just like himâ explained Fangmyer calmly pointing down on Chuck.
âFangmyer, heâs new-âbegan Delgato in Chucks defence.
âHe was warnedâ interrupted Fangmyer, dragging his claw through his fur and over his ears before pointing at Delgato, âand now you have been; stay away from Nickâ.
Delgato still had the taser aimed at Fangmyer, then slowly moved it over to Nick, Fangmyer hissing as he did so.
âThe money Nickâ began Delgato ignoring Fangmyer âyou need to return the money you stoleâ
âI didnât steal the moneyâ replied Nick in a breathless, bitter whisper, his chest burnt, his throat was dry and his spine throbbed rhythmically.
âHow did you get that money then? I mean, I donât mean to insult, but⊠look at youâ
Nick looked himself up and down from his scruffy fur to his torn pants, and chuckled in agreement, though Delgato was right; it did insult him.
âI was a cop Delgato⊠I was one of youâŠâcorrected Nick.
âYou werenât reallyâ Delgato wanted to reply; after all Jack and Maria had told the ZPD.
But he saw the look in Fangmyerâs eyes, in his old partnerâs eyes, anger and disgust.
Delgato slowly lowered the taser placing it in the holster. âNick where did you get the money?â he asked one last time using all his civility.
Nick pointed his thumb over his shoulder to the medical centre, âFray, the old chief medical officer at the ZPDâ.
Delgato sighed placing his face into his open paw, disgraced in himself âBogoâs old partnerâŠâ
Nick didnât reply he just nodded.
âNick, Iâm-â
âNever going to hassle him again and keep that piece of shit away from himâ finished Fangmyer pointing down to Chuck; who was on his paw and knees, only now getting up; with great diffictuly.
Delgato conceded in agreement, he began his way over to Nick and instantly Fangmyerâs fur stood on edge and he pivoted so he was blocking Nick.
âI just need the paw-cuffs Fangâsâ affirmed Delgato, unable to make eye contact with the cold glare of Fangmyer.
âDonât call me that, we are not friendsâ corrected Fangmyer.
âI just need the Cuffâs Fangmyerâ
Fangmyer turned to Nick unlocked the second cuff and turned shoving them at Delgato.
âNow, get out of here, Iâm sure Jack will need a full report as to why the new guy needs to go see Fray for stitchesâ.
Delgato placed the paw cuffs on the back of his belt; tipped his hat and turned to help Chuck to his feet.
Nick and Fangmyer just stood on the concrete, Nick went to leave and Fangmyer shook his head.
âNo, were not leaving, they areâ he confirmed.
Delgato and Chuck were getting into their cruiser when Chuck stopped halfway into the car.
âYou just think your untouchable donât you cat? Youâre going to regret this, you to foxâ he threatened pulling his thumb across his throat as if saying he will kill them.
Fangmyer just stood stern and strong âGet out of here, you punk ass bitch, before I even it up for youâ he snarled in a threat.
Chuck got in the car and instantly it pulled away from the curb.
âAre you okay Nick?â asked Fangmyer his eyes not leaving the cruiser. Â
Nick nodded placing his hands in his pockets and then pulling out the bag of notes, forgetting for a moment he had it.
âFangmyer take a seatâ he explained pointing to a nearby bench.
Fangmyer adhered instantly without thought, he walked over and sat down placing his head in his paws and rubbing his eyes.
âIdiotâ he grumbled; insulting himself, Fangmyer was annoyed that he had lost his temper in front of so many witnesses. He did it for all the right reasons, but hated when he lost control.
âIâm sorry Nickâ he sighed.
âWhat for?â replied Nick âfor helping me? For being a good cop?â
âFor losing my coolâ
Nick smiled and punched his arm âEveryone loses their cool sometimes, look wait hereâ ordered Nick getting up and hobbling off with great difficulty, his back still feeling the aftershock of Chucks assault.
Fangmyer waited several minutes starring at the table when he heard Nick sit back at the bench, a coffee placed in front of Fangmyer.
Nick looked into his eyes with a smile, Fangmyer picked up the coffee cup, as he went to sip it Nick also through a punnet of blueberries on the table, it slid to a halt between them. There was silent before the two of them erupted into laughter.
âItâs good to have you back Nickyâ
âMost of meâŠâ corrected Nick
âAny of you Nickâ retorted Fangmyer
âFangmyer, you said Chuck would have to see Fray, but sheâs no longer the chief medical officer at the ZPD?â
Fangmyer nodded sipping on his coffee before replying.
âThatâs right; but she made such a name for herself that they shut down the medical wing at the ZPD and she was offered the contract, as well as several other precincts and large companies in Zootopia, sheâs doing quite well for herself. I heard she has six or seven other doctors working for her as well, with two specialistsâ.
âHoly cow, thatâs amazingâ gasped Nick.
Fangmyerâs fur on the back of his neck had returned to normal and his eye were soft and calm as they usually were, his smile emitting brightly from his face.
âYeah, itâs amazing for her, but I still donât think sheâs happy, she hasnât been the same since BogoâŠbut you understand that Iâm sureâŠâ
Nick sipped on his coffee following it up with a pawful of blueberries.
âYepâ. Â
Big thanks to @articianne for her awesome commission! if you ever need any art done she is a brilliant artist to work with.
Nick gently turned his head to see Fray standing underneath the doorframe to her office, she held the doorhandle in her paw, Nick could see she was shaky to see him, no doubt shocked by his decayed state. Her grey eyes locked with Nick, he could see her guilt. The guilt of not telling Nick what she knew so long ago.
âHi Frayâ choked Nick, raising a grubby paw and waving timidly. The silence in the waiting room was still steady.
Fray turned to the administrator âPlease have Nicholasâ booking moved to priorityâ.
The administrator typed on her computer then turned confused to Fray.
âIâm sorry there doesnât seem to be a booking for a Nicholas Wilde in the systemâ she confirmed.
âFine, then Iâm on lunchâ explained Fray, gesturing for Nick to enter her office.
There was arguing and anger from others waiting but Fray just shut the door on them; leaving the administration team to deal with it.
There was an odd silence as Nick and Fray stood in the room across from one another.
Finally, Fray spoke âPlease take a seat Nickâ she started professionally.
Nick put his paws behind him and with great struggle lifted himself up on the table.
Fray slapped on a set of surgical gloves and grabbed Nickâs jaws opening his mouth and looking inside, before flashing a small flashlight into his eyes.
âSay ahâ she ordered, making the same face Nick did as he opened his mouth with an âahâ
She placed a Popsicle stick on his tongue looking to the back of his throat with the flashlight.
She then proceeded to wrap a machine around Nicks arm tightening it with Velcro; she pumped it up several times with air before checking the gauge and then tearing it from his arm; the Velcro making a horrid noise.
She moved to grasp his ear tight and folded it back, using the light to see deep into his ear canal; checking for ticks and any damage, before cleaning it out gently with a cotton bud.
She placed her gloves in the bin with the Popsicle and cotton buds and the other tools in the top of her draw.
She went to grab Nick and continue when he raised his paws.
âFray, I donât have money for thisâŠâ he explained trying to stop her, before she completed her task.
Fray rolled her eyes scoffing as if insulted, pushing Nickâs paws away and grabbing his shoulder, lifting his shirt and placing her stethoscope to his back, the cold sending a chill through Nicks spine as he shot up straight wanting to move away from the cold end of the stethoscope.
âStop moving Nicholas, you big babyâ she teased.
Frayâs eyes gently wandering through the abnormalities in his fur, small tufts, discoloured where the bullets had shredded him.
âBreath inâ she finally asked; after she realised she had sat silently starring at him for too long.
Nick took a deep breath and held it, although it hurt to do so. He knew what took Fray so long he knew what she was staring at.
âBreath outâ
Nick let the breath out, with great satisfaction.
âWow, your lungs are truly fuckedâ she declared.
âSo, whatâs the diagnosis doc? Am I dead?â chuckled Nick.
Fray however didnât laugh as she ran her fingers over the bullet wounds, and as Nick starred at her from his peripherals, he noticed her eyes were straining; she was holding back tears.
Without warning she gently placed her arms around Nick and hugged him, which caught Nick off guard; he gently laid his paws over her; his shirt tenderly rolling back down
âIâm so sorry Nickâ she explained.
Nick tapped her back twice âItâs okay⊠I wouldâve done the sameâŠâ He knew what she spoke about, she was sorry she didnât tell him about Maria, but how could she.
Fray took a breath and composed herself, taking a step back and letting go of Nick.
âSoâŠ. What happened after?â she asked; a need to know burnt deep in her gut.
Nick smiled âI diedâŠâ he confirmed âI guess to help you imagine losing her ..., it would be like losing BogoâŠ.only, he didnât die, he just ceased to exist, or never existedâ.
Fray took a hard swallow, hearing Bogoâs name still gave her an empty hit to the guts, but she nodded in acknowledgment knowing what Nick was trying to say.
âSo what have you done for the past year? I heard you had a daughter?â
Nickâs stomach twisted and he shut his eyes to centre himself.
âI have been living on a park benchâ he explained with no shame âand I havenât seen my daughterâŠeverâŠI mean, I have, but only from afarâ
âWhy only from afar?â
Nickâs eyes looked at her as if she should know the answer but answered her regardless âJack and Mariaâ.
Fray dropped her head, guilt rushing over her followed by disgust, that Maria and Jack would stop Nick from seeing his kit.
âIâm sorryâ.
âJack and Maria picked me apart in the court room for custody, nothing I said mattered, they had me completely hook line and sinkerâŠno job, I could barely walk⊠Heck even my policing certificate was null and voidâ.
âWhat do you mean your policing was null and void? You were one of the best officers the ZPD hadâŠâ
âIt was all a sham, the whole lot; I only passed the academy because they needed me to. It was a set up from the beginningâ.
âOh nickâ gasped Fray hugging him again.
âWhy donât you get a new job?â continued Fray still hugging him. Nick wanted to push her away, physical contact making him feel physically ill.
Nick pushed her back, to give himself space and to also gesture to himself.
âWhoâs going to hire, a shifty, disabled fox? Huh?â
Fray quickly turned remembering what she had found, she went to her draw without a word and began to rummage through it, she picked up a folded shirt that she kept in her top draw; the blood stained police shirt of Bogo, the one he wore the night he was attacked.
For a moment, she hugged it and held it close to her chest taking in a deep sniff, each time she looked upon it, she felt dead inside, she didnât wash it, she didnât want to lose whatever she had left of him in the stained fabric.
âBogoâs shirtâŠâ gasped Nick covering his mouth with his paw in shock, the view of the blood sending a shiver of guilt and sadness through every inch of his fur.
Fray nodded without looking back, tightening her hug on the shirt.
She then ran her paw over it until she came to the top chest pocket of the shirt; she unclipped the button and fiddled around; inside was a small rectangular piece of paper with a name and a number, that had been partially stained by the blood of Bogo.
She turned passing it to Nick, who flicked it around in his paws before raising an eyebrow.
âWhatâs this?â
Fray looked to the ground tucking the shirt between her folded arms.
âA final present from BogoâŠâshe explained before she let out a chuckle âyou know he thought you were one of the best and most dedicated officers he ever met, when we use to talk he never had a bad word to say about you. âI wish I had more officers like Wildeâ he would explainâ
Nick was lost for words and stood trying to tighten his quivering lip.
âA lady came and gave Bogo this card and made a complaint against Jack, I hope it helpsâ
Fray walked to the open draw of her desk and gently placed Bogoâs shirt back inside, her paw rubbing smoothly over the rough fabric before she closed it away.
âNow, where were we?â she explained turning with a smile.
She picked up a tube of liquid and squeezed some out onto her paw, rubbing it into the back of Nickâs neck.
âWhatâs that?â he explained with his head down as she kneaded the warm liquid into his fur
âFleasâ replied Fray monotone, straight back into work mode.
âRightâ
Fray then went through several cupboards and draws and placed several pills into a small disposable cup.
âTake theseâ she ordered, handing Nick the concoction of medicine.
âDo you have water?â asked Nick a little parched and worried he would choke on the mountain of pills.
Before he even finished his sentence Fray was holding a cup of water just in front of him.
Nick smirked taking the cup in his paw and one after another swished down the pills.
âHeart worm, Tick, general antibiotics, vitamins and mineralsâ she affirmed before Nick could ask what the pills were for.
Fray who then went to a cupboard came out with a thermometer between two fingers. âIâm going to need your temperatureâ she explained dawning on him.
Nickâs jaw dropped and he held his paws up defensively âAh, no thanksâ he stuttered.
She looked at Nick with a tilt of her head, confused at Nickâs actions, until the light bulb clicked.
âEww, in your mouth Nickâ she grumbled with a roll of her eyes.
âOh⊠yeah thatâs what I thought you meantâ chuckled Nick grabbing it swiftly and placing it between his lips.
Fray who watched Nick; smiled deviously
âWAIT!â she cried out loud as she began looking around as if scared âNICK! WRONG ONE! I gave you a rectal one!â she cried. âSpit it out, spit it out!â
âARGHâ Nick coughed and splattered spitting the thermometer into the bin below and sticking his tongue out; clawing at it.
Fray let out a cackle slapping her knee at Nickâs reaction
âIâm sorry⊠Iâm sorry, I was just kidding Nickâ she giggled âI couldnât help myselfâ.
Nick was mad for only a second before he also let out a laugh, knowing she hustled him good, before getting a fit of the giggles.
Fray leant down with the resonance of a laugh to pick up the thermometer from the bin, shaking it twice and checking the temperature.
A concerned look passing her face, âHeâll need a jabâ she confirmed to herself.
Nick was still laughing as he went back to taking his pills one after the other.
While Nick was preoccupied with the pills Fray rolled the leg of his pants up, pinched his thigh and jabbed a needle into him.
âYOUCH!â shouted Nick taken off guard. Â âTake it easy! I still feel pain ya knowâ.
âBig babyâ chuckled Fray while gently pushing the liquid from the needle into his body. The laughter slowly trickled off.
âNickâŠ. I thought you were deadâŠ.â explained Fray; while focusing on the needle.
Nick sighed âMe toâŠâ
âSo what are you doing back?â
The vixen from the park that stuck up for Nick crossed his mind the second Fray asked.
But he just smiled and replied âI donât knowâ.
Fray pulled the needle from Nicks thigh âWell you canât very well get back on your feet dressed like thatâ.
âUh, Fray, Iâm brokeâ clarified Nick, as if Fray couldnât see that for herself.
Fray turned to her desk and opened up her handbag that sat on the left hand side of her computer, she pulled out her purse and withdrew a substantial pawful of cash out before putting her purse back, she then turned her attention to the top draw of her desk and opened a small, tin safety box that resided within, turning the key twice to the left; only to fish out more money, she then turned presenting the wad of notes to Nick.
âWhoa, hey, no way, Iâm not taking your moneyâ he argued putting his paws out in protest.
âNick take it, please take itâ.
âFray I donât even have money to pay for the treatments you have just given me, Iâm not taking your moneyâ.
Fray pushed her paw harder so the money was against Nickâs chest.
âThe treatment was free, youâre a police officerâ.
âYeah I wasâ explained Nick pushing the cash back at Fray.
âNick, I wouldnât give it to you if I couldnât afford itâ she argued pushing back at Nick
âFray listen-â
âNO! You listen, this is the very god damn least I could do! The very leastâ she confirmed, her lip quivering.
âTake the money NickâŠpleaseâŠâ
âBut what about you?â replied Nick gently placing his paw around the cash, nervous that he was taking her hard earned money.
Fray sighed, her paw and Nicks gently touching.
âWhen Bogo diedâŠhe left me everything⊠His superannuation, his house, his whole inheritance, how do you think I had the money to start my practice, you donât have to worry about me Nickâ.
âHe really loved you, didnât he?â
Fray smiled, but her eyes cried âWe loved each otherâ
Nick held the money in his paw and looked at her
âI will be paying you this backâ he confirmed.
Fray smiled âI knew youâd say that, well youâre all done Nickyâ she smiled grabbing his arm and helping him to stand.
Nick got up and Fray leant down grabbing his walking stick, handing it to him.
âFray, thanks for everythingâ.
Fray placed her paw on his shoulder, âDonât be a stranger Nick, come see me whenever you want, or if you ever need anythingâ.
Nick looked at the cash in his paws before returning a truly heartfelt smile to Fray and shook the money

Jack arrived at the ZPD and slung his work coat over the back of his chair, his first priority was to turn the air con on; his whole body seemed to be seething, heat flaring from him like a volcano.
The air con beeped once and the shutters began to glide up and down, Jack using the small controller to stop the air flow directly on his face.
He stood in bliss, the sweat beads on his face turning to ice at the cool touch of the air conditioners breeze.
âDoes it really help?â snarled the voice of Nick.
Jack didnât open his eyes to see where the voice came from her simply sat in bliss in front of the air con with his eyes shut.
âShouldnât you be gone by now?â he asked the shadows of the ZPD office, âI took twice as much as I should haveâŠâ he explained, talking of his medicine.
âSmall pills canât fix whatâs going on with you Jackâ the voice that spoke this time was different, deeper and he knew it was coming from his office chair, he half opened his eye and had a peek, on his chair sat Bogo, his massive tree truck like arms folded across the desk, his eyes glaring at Jack through the shiny rims of his small glasses.
âYouâre not realâ sighed Jack, pumping the degrees on the air con lower, until his office was like the arctic.
âAre you trying to match the temperature of the room with that of your soul?â snickered Nick, Bogoâs shadow joining in the laughter.
Jack turned and stalked over to Bogoâs old desk, now his base of operation, spun the chair and sat directly on Bogo, who disappeared in a huff of smoke.
Jack reached for the bottom draw, he opened it and dug around until he got his hand on the glass he was looking for. He pulled out the glass; it was fancy and made of crystal, with âSavageâ engraved into it. He then reached into the same draw to pull out a bottle of Jack Spaniels.
He moved to the small bar fridge he had set up under his desk and pulled out several substantially sized ice cubes placing them into the glass with a âclinkâ. A more then generous nip of the whiskey was poured into the glass, splashing over the ice cubes. Jack took a swig and downed the whole glass in one go; slamming the glass down on the table, gently pulling his tie from his neck as he felt he was dying from heat.
âHow long you gunna keep this up Chief Savage?â pried Bogo in his deep accent.
Jack didnât reply, he just poured another shot and downed it, this went on until the pills kicked in and the ridge of the sun fluttered in the window over his shoulder, the silhouettes had disappeared after his seventh shot. The clock on his desk read 5:45am, he had one hour and fifteen minutes to get back to normal, he hid the crystal whisky glass back in his desk and the bottle of Jack Spaniels. He lay his head in-between his arms, placing them on the desk, having set an alarm for a 30-minute kip. He had fixed his tie, the sweat gone from the blasting iciness of the air condition.
His eyes shut and he sighed as the darkness of sleep engulfed him.
He got up groggily looking around his office, his alarm had not yet gone off but he was sure he had overslept, he looked to the alarm clock only to realise he had set the alarm for PM instead of AM, groaning in annoyance at his own stupidity.
He looked around the office nervously, checking his message and emails to make sure he had not been caught.
He popped open the top draw taking out a packet of mints and gum, he demolished two mints and threw the gum in his mouth chewing frantically, hoping to cover the all too familiar scent of straight spirit. He then popped two paracetamol tablets, before he reclined in his chair taking deep breathes and having several glasses of water, pulling out all the stops to get his head back in the game.
This had become another ritual of sorts for Jack, a silent, undisturbed night of sleep was becoming more and more impossible for him and getting over his habitual new drinking habit that to begin with was a challenge; had simply become something he had to work around.
This was the weakest and most useless Jack had felt in his entire life; unsure of who to turn to and what to do to fix it, his usual fix for things like this was aggression.
He slid from his seat and made his way to the door, cracking it open and peering outside, all around officers were getting to their jobâs, Jack sighed thankful that he had not been caught sleeping on the job and even more that no one had annoyed him all morning.
He looked to his wrist to check his watch; it was twenty past seven. He could tell the alcohol was not all gone as he had to stare at his wrist watch for several moments before he could make out the time, while reading the time; over his wrist, he saw an officer walk in late.
âFangmyer, late again?â growled Jack to himself.
Jack ran to the edge of the balcony.
âFangmyer!â he shouted for all to hear, before pointing an order for Fangmyer to come and see him.
Fangmyer finished his talk with Nick and took off for work, sad he was not able to get more out of Nick but thankful enough at the fact he was talking.
Fangmyer got to the station at 7:20am almost 20 minutes late and as he walked in and greeted Clawhauser, he heard Jack yell from the higher balconies above.
âFangmyer!â
Jack didnât say anything more; he just pointed toward his office.
Fangmyer rolled his eyes knowing he was trying to replicate Bogo and came off as nothing but annoying and pretentious.
Fangmyer began his way to the office when he passed Maria, who waved at him.
âHey Fangmyer, you ready to make the world a better place?â she asked giddily
âLike you did for Nick?â replied Fangmyer, sipping the last of his coffee; without even looking at her or breaking his stride.
Maria had been trying to get into Fangmyerâs good book since everything happened, no doubt wanting some inside information on the well-being of Nick, Fangmyer seeing his silence on the matter and her unknowing of Nick as a good punishment for her actions. Something for her to stew on.
Fangmyer was almost at Jacks officer when he got pounced on.
âHAHA, in trouble again stripes?â hooted Delgato, Fangmyerâs old partner, who stood next to his new partner and new recruit, a Hyena named Chuck.
âWhen you gunna learn?â laughed Delgato slapping his shoulder.
âYeahâ chimed in Chuck uninvited, cackling without control âmaybe you should make friends with the chief, instead of bumsâ, the reference was to Nick, who Chuck had picked on once before and not since, Fangmyer made sure of that.
Fangmyerâs eyes turned aggressively serious; however, his face remained almost bland, like a maniac
He went to take a step forward; his aggression aimed at Chuck, when Delgato gently laid his paws on Fangmyerâs chest standing in front of him. Fangmyer was burning to the touch, he was seething.
âWoah, woah, let it go budâ laughed Delgato trying to calm him, patting him twice gently on the chest.
âYeah, let it go stripesâ chimed in the Hyena.
Delgato shut his eyes âWhy couldnât he just stay quietâ he thought to himself
âCan you go nowâ ordered Delgato pointing, trying desperately to defuse the situation, knowing Chuck was doing it intentionally.
âWhere?â retorted Chuck sardonically.
âAnywhere but hereâ confirmed Delgato with a disbelieving shake of his head and growl in his tone.
Chuck walked off smug
âDonât think Iâve forgotten our first run-in, catâ shouted the Hyena over his shoulder, using the word cat derogatorily.
Fangmyer glared and went to follow him when again Delgato pulled Iâm back.
âFangâs, let it go, stop this, whatâs up with you today?â.
âThat guy-â
âIs a douche, I know, but we canât go attacking our own people, all blue rememberâŠâ explained Delgato hoping Fangmyerâs own motto would break down his anger.
Without intent Fangmyer aggressively pushed Delgatoâs paws from his chest
âYou know that went out the windowâ snarled Fangmyer turning and continuing to Jacks office
Delgatoâs shoulders dropped with his ears, sad that Fangmyer had gotten angry now with him, âWhen?â shouted out Delgato after him.
âWhen Jack and Maria, chose to kill one of our ownâ he shouted loud for all to hear, looking up to Jack who stood on the level above glaring down on him.
Maria looking back, hearing it from down the hallway, her paw curling into her chest and her ears dropping, as Nick crossed her mind at Fangmyerâs words. All officers around her shot her judgemental glances.
Fangmyer reached Jacks office opening the door and walking in. Jack was sitting in Bogoâs seat, shuffling papers around on the desk.
âKnockâ explained Jack without looking up.
Fangmyer walked over to the desk and made a fist; smacked his paw on the table twice looking directly at Jack, a sarcastic knock, before moving back and standing in the middle of the room his paw in front of him his legs evenly spread apart.
Jack and Fangmyerâs eyes not breaking from one another for the longest moment.
Jack went back to his paperwork and Fangmyer tilted his head back, looking to the ceiling and around the office.
Silence lingered for almost five minutes while Jack flicked through paperwork and sent emails. His tediousness making Fangmyer roll his eyes.
âFangmyerâ finally began Jack, saying his name with a sigh while taking his glasses off and placing them on the desk.
âYes captain?â replied Fangmyer holding professional standard in his tone. Â
âWhy are you late?â he asked not looking at Fangmyer but instead over some papers on his desk âItâs been going on for some time nowâ.
Fangmyer was fed up with his coyness, knowing full well Jack knew where he was each morning. Fangmyer smiled.
âWell, sir, you know how we have a homeless issue, people who need looking after, animals with no home or place to go?â
âYes, I see them all the time, itâs truly saddeningâ agreed Jack, half listening.
Fangmyer stalked forward slamming his paws on Jackâs desk to well get his attention
âWell Sir- when the ZPD put them there I think it my duty to help them back on their feetâ he growled through gritted teeth.
Jack finally realised what Fangmyer was talking about and simply sat snarling at him.
âHow was Nickâs Kits belting the other day?â asked Fangmyer using the words âNickâs Kitâ in place of Alisonâs real name to rev up Jack, the words slicing through Jacks skin.
Jack pictured jumping across the table and showing Fangmyer one for.
âFineâ replied Jack tapping paperwork so it was symmetrical âHer belting was fineâ.
âHow do you tell her you guys are related, like, does she believe you?â
Fangmyer knew he was being petty and wrong, this was dog fighting and he knew it, but he couldnât help himself.
Jacks paws clenched the paperwork in his grasp and his eyes glared at Fangmyer
@patrickarch
âI mean it must be hard to focus on being a good leader, when you couldnât even help the one person who gave everything for you and that slu-â
âThatâs enoughâ snapped Jack standing and punching a divot into Bogoâs desk.
âDo itâ pleaded Fangmyer moving his face close enough for Jack to throw a swing.
âDo it, and Iâll show you exactly what a predator can doâ continued Fangmyer baiting Jack.
âCome on, Iâll get some for Nickâ he snarled âyou know, the father of Alisonâ
Jack let go and felt the anger rush over him, his fist tightened and just as he reefed his elbow back to smack Fangmyer; the phone came on loudspeaker interrupting them.
âSir, we have a situation that could use your attention down hereâ explained Clawhauser.
Jack and Fangmyer were frozen like statues both looking at the phone then one another.
Jacks arm gently fell and he picked up the phone, flicking his ear up, Fangmyer turned with a dismissive âhuffâ heading for the door.
âYes, Iâll be right downâ.
Jack placed down the phone, looked up; Fangmyer was just about out the door.
âOh, and Fangmyer?â called out Jack
Fangmyer took a breath and turned having to try extremely hard not to lose his temper
âWhat?â
Jack smiled smugly going back to his paperwork.
He pointed his pen in Fangmyerâs direction âParking dutyâ.
