From the really excellent Letās Talk About (Other Peopleās) Writing! meme:
3. What fic really made you think, and why?
Beringaeās The Nietzsche Classes. Think about all of the bigotry and racism and discrimination in the world. Think about World War II. What if you were able to force high-ranking members of the Nazis-- and their children-- to take classes that were meant to convince you that all of your ideologies were completely wrong? What would that process look like? How would you appeal to those people-- with pathos, ethos, or logos? Or both? Would it be truly effective? How could you even tell? What do you do when your job is to philosophically and psychologically break these people? Itās not simple, and neither the students-- nor the professor-- come out of the classes unscathed, as Hermione Granger learns in this fantastic post-war Harry Potter Dramione fic.Ā
Incredibly timely, especially considering the positives-- and failings-- around tumblrās social justice culture.Ā
9. Talk about a scene that stayed with you.Ā
Ok, this is a super tough one! Um, so some people might know that my OG OTP is Harry/Hermione (I know I have a lot of followers/mutuals who are Romione and Hinny fans, so whoops, sorry not sorry) and thereās this great fic called Come Together by Granger (that is so old it was started in 2002) that I was lucky enough to find right when I came to FF and thereās a scene where Harry is essentially freaking out because in this AU when he defeated Voldemort, all of Voldemortās powers went into him and he never told Hermione or Ron about it (he defeated Voldemort alone) and now heās finally told Hermione and he thinks sheās going to reject him, but she doesnāt.Ā
She makes a comment about how she thinks this was meant to happen, and the author puts in a great line about how Hermione usually uses logic to bury her feelings, but in this instance sheās using logic to explain them to Harry.Ā
Harryās a bit bemused by her rationale and says:Ā āI thought you didnāt believe in fate.ā
And she says-- simply, immediately--Ā āI donāt. I believe in you.āĀ
And for me thatās the epitome of their relationship and why I ship them-- and why I have since I was ten years old and had no clue what shipping was. That sums up their relationship to me: when it comes to Harry, no amount of logic can explain why Hermione breaks rules and sometimes goes against her principles to protect and stand by him, other than her complete and utter faith in him. Itās so lovely, and every time I write Harmony I think of this fic and that scene.Ā
