The guyâs gone quiet -- some poor young sonofabitch they installed as a guard,Â
whoâd started out all swagger and threats and hadnât taken very long toÂ
start shaking, point him in the right direction. (He doesnât look much moreÂ
than twenty, but that doesnât mean anything -- thereâs no such thing as tooÂ
young with this crowd.) Itâs a reprieve from his chatter from earlier; maybe heâsÂ
a nervous talker, or maybe he thought he could annoy Bucky enough to getÂ
him to leave quicker.Â
It really doesnât matter -- heâs got what he needed, a couple of a files, archivalÂ
AV recordings, and some tech thatâs seen better days -- and itâs only takenÂ
the better part of an hour to make sure nothingâs missing. This isnât hardlyÂ
a library, so he can take as long as he needs to go through it all at his place.Â
Thereâs plenty left in the room that he hasnât touched, hasnât even gone near;Â
medical supplies, objects that look vaguely familiar in a way he doesnât wantÂ
to question too hard. More than enough for them to be able to pretend thatÂ
whatâs missing was gone when he got there, if they bother to check.Â
Bucky plants himself in front of the kid, smile deceptively friendly. ItâsÂ
half-familiar; and he doesnât quite feel bad about the way the kid flinchesÂ
when Bucky claps a hand on his shoulder. (Occupational hazard, he reasons.)Â
âYou wanna keep breathinâ, youâre gonna keep this between us, huh?â ItâsÂ
not the right time yet to go in guns blazing, but heâs been trying not to leaveÂ
too much of a trail of bodies in his wake. Doesnât need the questions. HeÂ
doesnât have to worry about it anyway, because as soon as the kid nods,Â
he gets a left hook hard enough to keep him out for a good long while.Â
He sends the text as he makes his way out, one-handed.
