Wine of the Week
Falernia Pedro Ximenez 2010
I had to stare at this bottle for a few minutes before actually being able to process what I was seeing. A still, unfortified Pedro Ximenez? This I had to try.
I’d only seen Pedro Ximenez on Sherry labels from Spain, but this wine is from the Elqui Valley, which is about 300 miles north of Santiago in Chile. It is crisp and dry, and like some other interesting wines I’ve tried recently I did have a bit of a time trying to describe it. It has some petrol and a nice minerality on the nose and is crisp and dry on the palate. It has floral, almond, and Granny Smith apple notes on the palate and a nice medium-length finish. This was an interesting bottle, a light and pleasant summer wine and at $7.99 a solid value.
