members of the fairfeather give their significant others good luck and protection charms like the ones they wear. these are often handmade, the stones rougher cut and less elegantly secured, cord tied into sailor’s knots like the thick hemp ropes used on the ship. they also almost always feature small, extra pieces not seen on the more uniform charms of the crew, meticulously carved stone and shell beads strung along the cord.
(as a note: the charms are made specifically for protection against stormy seas, but they’ve gradually also come to be symbols for good luck and protection against harm)
