As Filipino American History Month draws to a close, we have one more hero to share. And that's Samala, our Director and fearless leader! Prior to starting and leading 18MR, Samala was in charge of online strategy & media The Story of Stuff Project. Oh, and you might occasionally catch her spinning your favorite 90s jams at Madrone Art Bar. We've highlighted many heroes this month, but there are so many people out there who work for justice without getting recognition. Thanks to everyone who nominated their heroes!

In addition to holding it down at NQAPIA heading up campaigns and  programs, his work to honor Filipino American WWII veterans has earned him recognition both here in the U.S. and in the Philippines. Plus, he's a sci-fi nerd like us!

Allistair Mallillin, Executive Director of Asian American Resource Workshop (AARW), is today’s Filipino American History Month Hero! In addition to heading up AARW, providing cultural and political outlets for Asian Americans in Boston, Allistair is also involved with Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy and the Saffron Circle.

Emily Lawsin, professor, poet, and force of nature, is today's Filipino American History Month Hero! To say that Emily is a powerhouse is to understate her value to Detroit, the University of Michigan, and the Filipino American community. In addition to teaching in A/PIA Studies, she is a cofounder of the Detroit Asian Youth Project and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Filipino American National Historical Society.
