in general, can fae be trusted?
Mod Fire: This is a tricky question because it really depends on what you mean by trustworthy. I think fae typically have a reputation for not being trustworthy because if you assume they’re going to behave in a certain way and they don’t then it feels untrustworthy. You definitely can’t trust them to behave in the same way humans do or to act in your best interests.Â
Most fae view humans as inferior and don’t feel obligated to treat you in a way that you’d consider reasonable and respectful. Overall, fae culture is so different from human culture that it often causes a lot of mistrust and misunderstanding. Also, every fae spirit is an individual and how they behave depends on their species, court alignments (or lack thereof), and individual personality.Â
In general, here’s what you can usually trust fae to do, although there’s always going to be exceptions…
- Fae will usually be honest, there is almost always truth to what they say. So they are absolutely trustworthy in that sense.Â
- However, they can lie if they really want to, and just because they’re being honest doesn’t mean they are sharing the whole truth. Fae are extremely good at deceiving and tricking others. So they aren’t at all trustworthy in that sense.
- Fae motives are typically concerned with their own best interests, the best interests of their court if they have one, and/or the best interests of nature and the fae realms. Not your best interests necessarily.
- Fae culture usually honors reciprocity, this is especially true of Seelie fae. An eye for an eye or a gift for a gift mentality. So if you give something to a fae spirit, you can usually trust to receive something in return.
I hope that mini-guide to fae culture helps in understanding them a little better. It’s hard to generalize too much because of course every spirit has free will and that means there’s always exceptions.
