Fae king Lou Ferrigno jr. for @procrastinatingfeminist who planted the idea in my head (I know you prefer the three thirds profile but I think this makes his eyes more prominent). Haven't worked with copics for ages, but I like the ultra clean look here.

All his life, Pugsley has been told he's a changeling. Any time he does something not quite Addams, its because of that. One night, after the final straw, Pugsley decides to do something about it. If he's a changeling then he'll just go back to the fae wild where maybe someone will actually want him. What he gets instead is deal after deal with the king of the unseelie and a web he can't seem to find his way out of. Kept as a pet, used for the court's sick amusement, he's trapped for eternity....only something begins to change. The king is growing softer with him and he finds in himself something almost like fondness for the fae in return. But is fondness enough to free him or is it just another twisted game?
Yes, We Get It, He's The Torturedly Grumpy Fae King with A Big, Soft, Gooey Center
This is gonna be a relatively fast one, y'all, because this book was...well...the TLDR for me was that this was just a generic grumpy fae fantasy with underdeveloped worldbuilding. The writing was entirely competent, and the characters were mostly good, if a little unevenly written in moments, but...there wasn't anything that made this one stand out from the crowd for me. Let's talk Silver & Blood.
Ok, look. The worldbuilding was cardboard. That's my biggest issue with the book. We have season-based fae courts without much detail, we have a generically scary cursed forest, and we have a magic castle. It's ticking boxes, but it's a cardboard background and theatre set without depth or detail to make it immersive. For those of you who like hard magic systems, I think this probably counts, sort of, because there are rules and limits but they're not explained in much depth and there is some soft magic "because magic" stuff that creeps in, which I think it more a result of the thin worldbuilding than a badly thought through magic system.
I did LIKE the interactions between Riela and Garrick, for the most part, but without more grounding in the world and clearer stakes sooner, a lot of it felt scripted. Grim and Riela felt LESS scripted, but again, I think stronger worldbuilding and more specificity would have helped. I also found that Garrick's writing in particular tended to jump somewhat erratically in tone between "ANCIENT ELDRITCH FAE KING" and "tortured dude in his late 20s." Which. Pick one. I'm begging.
This book was not bad. It just...kind of felt like one of the crowd for me. Your mileage may vary on this one, particularly if you want less smut than say, an SJM ACOTAR novel and something that mixes the vibes of A Court of Thorns and Roses with a dash of the tone of One Dark Window. There is 100% an audience for this book, and it's OBJECTIVELY better written than a lot of romantasy that I've read the last couple of years, so I can recommend it on that level. It just wasn't grabbing me.
