'Kidex cancellation undermines efforts to resolve Klang Valley traffic congestion'
KUALA LUMPUR, March 24, 2015:
The cancellation of the Kinrara-Damansara (Kidex) Highway project will create a dilemma for private companies wishing to invest in the construction of highways in Selangor.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said it would also undermine efforts by the federal government to resolve traffic congestion in the Klang Valley.
“We have to look at the implications of the cancellation. What happens to future investments? Will people be willing to invest in Selangor to make highways and make plans for public transport? It will be a dilemma for the private parties,” he said when winding up the debate on his ministry on the motion of thanks on the Royal Address by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Dewan Rakyat here today.
Fadillah said the federal government had endeavoured to resolve public complaints over traffic congestion woes in the Klang Valley through the implementation of Kidex and MRT projects.
He said the implementation of the Kidex project should be viewed holistically as it would reduce traffic congestion and the state would benefit immensely from the socio-economic spillover effects.
“We respect the decision to cancel (Kidex) made by the state government because it is their right, we (the federal government) will implement any project that will benefit the people.
“We get complaints from the people asking us to resolve the congestion problems, therefore, we consider this (Kidex project) solution offered by private parties, which were then presented to the Selangor Economic Action Council and it received conditional approval on Feb 23, 2012,” he said.
He said the Selangor government must find ways to overcome the problem faced by the people when cancelling the project.
On the government’s stand on whether the project would be cancelled, Fadillah said it required in-depth study and the ministry needed to seek advice from the Attorney-General’s Chambers about the legal implications arising from its cancellation.

Fadillah's approach implies he's representing Kidex concessionaire, says former minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19, 2015:
Why has the Works Minister referred the cancellation of the controversial Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) project to the Cabinet and Attorney-General’s Chambers for further clarification?
This is the question former Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim is asking as the approach taken by Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof implies the latter was representing the concessionaire.
“As such I would like to request the minister to organise a question and answer session on Kidex so that the public can ask more questions on the issue,” he said in a series of tweets last night.
The former Umno and PKR politician also slammed the proposed highway project, describing it as a typified Barisan Nasional-approved project.
“This is what a BN project is all about, approve it first and then think later; which is why the minister has given extension after extension to the company.
“In the minister’s statement, not one sentence was written as to why the project was approved in the first place.” he claimed.
In a brief statement yesterday, Fadillah said that following the announcement by the Selangor government to cancel the project, the ministry would be referring to the Cabinet to seek a solution to the issue.
The Works Ministry, he said, was of the opinion that the issue must be resolved through negotiations with all parties in the best interest of the people.
On Monday, Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali announced the cancellation of the much talked about project.
In a statement, Mohamed Azmin said this was because Kidex had failed to comply with the conditions set by the given deadline, which was Feb 14.
