I first heard this song when I was in high school, during a Much Music spotlight on Feist in which she listed her ten current favourite songs-this was one of them. I thought he looked so dorky but I immediately fell in love with the song and then later, his other music. He always writes the catchiest pop hooks but pairs them with these sweetly awkward lyrics-maybe it’s intentional or maybe it’s because English is his second language lol. Who knows. 

Beyond that. his music has some deeper sentimental value for me: I remember my Dad liking this album when I played it for him, which in hindsight makes sense to me because my Dad loved the artists Sondre Lerche counts as his primary influences-Elvis Costello, Burt Bacharach (!), and Chet Baker. My Dad didn’t like a lot of the music I played at that time (he thought Jeff Buckley was really overwrought), so I was excited to have found something we could agree on. My Mom and younger sister got into it too, so Sondre Lerche’s music formed the background to a lot of nice family memories during what was otherwise a really difficult, heartbreaking time.

While rediscovering this song (and album) earlier this afternoon, I got to thinking about other albums and music that form the soundtrack/s to formative periods of our lives. Obviously I am about the 14 millionth person to have this thought, but all the same, I’d be curious to know-what music got you through a tough time in your life? What did you listen to when you first started to feel like an adult? Is it a particular song or album? Do you think that kids today have the same experience? I am not sure they do.. I am not sure I do-I usually just shuffle through my music. It takes a lot for me to sit down and listen to an entire album, even a new one by an artist I like. Case in point: I’ve not listened to Sondre’s last two albums, only sampled a few singles.

Do you find yourself doing the same thing or do you have more patience and focus than I do?
