The last tree on Earth fell today. Not from an axe, nor a storm, but from the crushing weight of denial. For decades, humanity chose profit over preservation, pettiness over purpose, and deception over truth. The bitter air now stings with the irony of a species too clever for its own survival.
Snottiness and venialness paved the path to extinction, cloaked as virtues in a world addicted to appearances. Politicians fabricated hope while behind closed doors they signed contracts that scorched rainforests and polluted oceans. Social elites trivialized climate activists as “alarmists” while sipping drinks flown in from across the globe. Even as ecosystems collapsed and cities drowned, the rich built higher walls and the powerful sharpened their lies. Humanity’s refusal to confront its own selfishness metastasized into an unrelenting spiral of destruction.
Now, as temperatures climb beyond what the human body can endure and oceans churn with storms that never cease, the planet stands as a graveyard to once-vibrant life. The venial pursuit of fleeting pleasures has turned Earth into a barren husk. The few survivors, huddled in underground bunkers, carry with them the shame of a species that ignored every warning. Their whispered stories are not of heroes but of hubris, not of triumph but of willful ruin. The end did not come as a surprise; it came as a consequence.
