North American F-107 USAF tactical fighter-bomber design competition 1950s, based on F-100 Super Sabre incorporated many innovations and radical design features, notably over-fuselage air intakes. The competition was eventually won by the Republic F-105 Thunderchief

"The North American F-107B Sabre Fury was a prototype derived from the YF-107 Ultra Sabre and offered to both the U.S. Air Force and Navy as a fast interceptor. The air intakes were lateral instead of dorsal, the rear fuselage was redesigned and the wings and empennage were new. Although it failed to be procured in quantity, the Sabre Fury paved the way for the Navy's Vigilante attack/recce aircraft, which drew heavily on the design..."
