It’s hard to recognize that a person we admire is actually a scumbag. We want to believe that it's a misunderstanding, more or less voluntary distortions or even just blunder without malice. We’re looking for every excuses in the world.
It’s normal. It’s human.
But one day, we have to open our eyes and admit that we were wrong. That the person isn't as great as we thought, that their creation contains many disturbing aspects, that they defends repugnant values and that we indirectly gave them the resources to do it.
It’s a grieving process that we all have to go through at some point of our lives.
I don’t have any answer or quick fix on how to deal with that. I myself still wonder whether my method is good or not.
Despite everything, I sincerely believe that it is necessary not to completely deny everything that our ex-hero and their work have brought us. Because like it or not, both are part of us and have allowed us to build ourselves as a person. Some can even indirectly save lives.
So yes, I am happy that Harry Potter exists and I would always be grateful to Rowling for the books and all the people involved in the movies, theme park and studios.
But she’s not the kind of creator I want to become.
I want to be worthy of the love that could be given to my work. I want to propose a universe where people could feel safe, even if it’s just for a few hours. Above all, I want to learn from my mistakes so that I can continue to improve and remain worthy of the interest I have.
I certainly won't create the new Bible, but at least I will remain faithful to the values I want to transmit.
Happy Pride Month everyone 🏳️🌈
