This is from book 2, Burn the Bone (this should be done soon but who knows?):

Red looked back at Roger, his face was drawn in hard lines and he wore his trademark low, tight ponytail.  A burgundy vest over a grey button-down shirt complete his evil librarian look. He was older, his hair streaked with white but Red could have sworn he hadn’t changed since she saw him last, a permanent fifty-something.

Distracted by her endless procession of thoughts, Red didn’t notice that Roger had pulled something out of his pocket and stepped close to her restrained arm. He held a syringe with a strange, light blue liquid inside it. Roger tapped the surface of her inner elbow to brighten the vein. Her skin color made it difficult to locate the small purple lines, but Roger managed to isolate one.

“Relax now. This sedative will make it easier to work.”

Before Red had the chance to question the injection, the sleeping drug had worked its magick and she was out.  

She didn’t completely fall asleep. Red could still sense where she was but everything around her, the room itself, rippled and waved. Red could only make out random glimpses of Roger looming above her when her eyes actually opened. She felt weighed down, like lead balls were strapped to her arms and legs. Roger himself seemed to twist and pull apart; bright, flaming entrails hanging from his ribcage.

Then suddenly there was pain, tremendous pain. Red felt as if her skin was peeling from her body. Her arms burned as the flaying continued. She fought as hard as her mind would allow. She screamed at herself to wake, to move, to do something to make the pain stop. Dimitri’s face appeared behind her closed lids and something inside her snapped.

Red couldn’t, wouldn’t, die. She had to see Dimitri again, if only to yell at him again, and she had to kill this self-absorbed, high and mighty asshole. She was nobody’s pawn. Red concentrated on the source of power deep inside of her and released everything she had at once. A fiery shield wrapped around her and protected her with fierce determination but it wasn’t as powerful as she’d hoped. It did manage to knock Roger back and clear her mind of the drug. The world clicked into reality and Roger shuffled up from the ground.

He was covered in char and a bit singed but whole and looked completely unhurt aside from a few small burns and scrapes. Well, he’s not fireproof.

“Hmm, I must admit I wasn’t expecting that. You managed to push back just before I had enough. Tsk, tsk. I do love a challenge though.”

Roger turned away and walked to the door. He opened the steel barrier and the light from the hall stung Red’s eyes.
