this place is so perfectly creepy. It’s a small, coastal town that’s watched over by an elusive wizard who lives in a floating castle in the sky. The town is full of tamed elements that live to serve the townsfolk and defend them from harm- unless it’s one of the horrible children making them fight for fun.
There’s stories of people being invited up to the castle and never returning. But the villagers think nothing of it, of course. Those invited are probably just so busy with their new lives in the castle they don’t have time to come back ever.
I think it’s a common assumption that these villagers are being taken and made into docile elementals, destined for servitude for the rest of their lives.

Kourna fills me with dread because much like Jahai I’ve spent so much time there not for enjoyment, but to farm. Beetle, Skyscale, backpieces, meta achievements... But now that I’ve had some time away from it I’m able to go back and appreciate how pretty it is.

Ameyalli is the name of the hylek nature goddess. She is an animistic deity worshiped by the Itzel and Nuhoch tribes. To these hylek, Ameyalli is both the spirit and substance of the Heart of Maguuma itself. As such any challenge, prey, and predator that enters the jungle is a blessing (or blessing in disguise) sent by Ameyalli. The sole exception to this belief are the Mordrem, which the hylek view as invaders with nothing to gain from. Followers of Zintl view the Mordrem invasion of the jungle as proof that Ameyalli has failed the hylek and is not worth worshiping anymore, and use this belief as propaganda to promote Zintl's faith among the tribes of Maguuma.
