WHO'S DOWN FOR A HIGH-TECH TEAM BUILDING ADVENTURE?
On the morning 22nd of June, 2014, Asia Ability conducted yet another Go Team event as a team building and training activity for two Malaysian investment companies, as part of their merger and integration efforts. The Go Team event is a high-tech “Amazing Race”-ish activity which requires participants to be active and move from checkpoint to checkpoint in order to complete tasks. These tasks as well as the navigation through the checkpoints are all covered solely on the iPad. It is also a competitive event whereby the teams have to earn as many points as possible by reaching as many of the available checkpoints and executing the tasks to the best of their ability.
The participants gathered in the Saffron ballroom of the Equarius hotel, with most already prepared and dressed up for the activity. Since it was early in the morning, our lead facilitator David Fotheringham started off the session with a short energiser consisting of shouts and active movements to boost the energy levels of the participants and of course to awaken those who were still in sleepy mode…! The participants were an enthusiastic bunch, with lots of shouting, talking and laughter punctuating the air in the ballroom.
The teams are given the freedom to choose the different checkpoints in which they wish to clear first, allowing them to strategise as a team and formulate a route to clear as many tasks as possible. These tasks include answering questions on the memorabilia displayed at the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel and submitting photos of the group enjoying themselves with the various attractions present at Resorts World Sentosa. With each task, the members slowly and gradually opened up to each other more, with more conversations and laughter taking place throughout the race. The tasks provide a common goal and objective which unifies the team, while the execution bonds and creates a memorable experience for the participants.
By 11am, everyone gathered back at the Saffron ballroom as the race was over. Upon declaration of the winner of the race, the victorious team burst into cheers and celebration, with the other teams congratulating them in kind with applause. After all, Go Team is not about winning or losing; it is about working together as a team, enjoying the process and forging new experiences with the team.
Singapore was taken over by 550 of KPMG Asia Pacific Region senior management team for Asia Ability’s newest program – GO TEAM! Go Team is a new spin on a treasure hunt with more interactivity and versatility than any other.
The ultimate city tour with no need for a guide! A fun and focused way to experience a new city as teams navigate the key attractions and engage in a real taste of city life by the testing the countries foods and cultural traditions – all whilst competing to gain the most points and win the Go Team top spot!
We provided each team with a sophisticated I-Pad installed with the Go Team app and with unlimited internet connection. Clients use the Go Team app and are directed to specific checkpoints around the city of Singapore using GPS navigation systems on their team I-pad. You may have seen the TV challenge Amazing Race, in which teams use clues and navigation notes to reach multi-location activity challenges. Go Team takes this kind of challenge to the next level, dispensing with paper trails and clues; and instead using modern technology to interact with each team through our controllers – a team of Asia Ability Facilitators who track each team on their ‘live’ maps from HQ.
Team tasks along the route include photo challenges, shopping tasks or trivia questions – but the instructions are only granted to you once you reach the right destination and your GPS goes ‘ping’ releasing the next challenge question! Teams can gain extra points by requesting on demand questions as they travel to the next checkpoint. Questions are submitted virtually to our controllers who score the photos or answers as they are completed.
Each team KPMG team kicked off the challenge at Check Point 1 and has 42 checkpoints to find in total, each checkpoint was another opportunity to gain more points and win the game. KPMG was indeed very competitive, as they started from the Ritz Carlton Hotel to Marina Bay Sands passing by Kampung Glam, the landmark Merlion, the Esplanade and many other landmarks in Singapore. They also enjoyed Singaporean food such as bread ice cream, durian & sugar cane from local street stalls as part of their challenges.
Asia Ability’s new Go Team program can cater for unlimited numbers of participants. It can be tailor made for any city in the world and even include challenges and questions personalised for that specific client – testing how well the team know their own company history or values! It does not required clients to be tech-savvy, as the Asia Ability controller at HQ are online to support each team. As Steve Jobs said, “It’s not faith in Technology, It’s faith in people”. Using the Go Team interactive application - clients are able to communicate with the controller as well as their virtual facilitator.
Even those who were worried that this event was only suited to die-hard I-pad fans or technology whizzes, realised how simple the software was to use. The teams all embraced the high energy event after a clear briefing, especially with the support of our Asia Ability Controllers who virtually supported them along the way.
Once again, Asia Ability has been honored to work with an enthusiastic client team, and as the controllers receive their photo challenge submissions and team messages throughout the event, we could see KPMG were enjoying every single challenge and the city of Singapore.
The Asia Ability teams has been working hard to get this new and innovative event off the ground and it was a joy to see the teams run off with their I-pads full of energy and competitive spirit! GO TEAM is definitely a journey full of adventure, innovation, fun & brain power and we can't wait to run this team event in other cities around the world!
