this happened to me last night while I was trying to sleep
"exploding head syndrome" is one of the funniest names for a real medical condition ever. like yeah I'm really tired today bc my head kept exploding last night. lmfao
trying to fall back to sleep at 5 am and kept getting startled awake by the phantom sound of slamming doors. I occasionally get this, I guess it's Exploding Head Syndrome. Per Wiki:
"Exploding head syndrome is an abnormal sensory perception during sleep in which a person experiences auditory hallucinations that are loud and of short duration when falling asleep or waking up."
I often get the strong light flashes too, sometimes they've been so intense I open my eyes because the dark room is a relief!
I think it's pretty common (wikipedia says 10% which is A LOT of people) but it's annoying.
