"don't leave."
âDonât leave.â It sounded so pathetic and small, eyes closed as he gasped. âPlease donât leave.â
Akane moved closer with her chair; she took Zenkichiâs hand in her own, giving it a gentle squeeze. âIâm not going anywhere, Dad.â She was swallowing thickly, the other hand placed on top. âAnd neither are you. Youâre too stubborn to go anywhere.â
Zenkichi tried to laugh, but it came out as a cough. The smile wasnât there, either. âI dunno, honey. IâŠâ
She shook her head. âNo. Donât you dare say it.â She could feel her eyes stinging. âIf I donât get to leave, then neither do you.â There was bite in her voice, so much like her father; she had grown so much in four years. âYou donât get to roll over and die from this. I wonât let you.â
Zenkichi felt every word, heard every snap in each syllable. Deep within his mind, something rumbled- no. Someone rumbled.
âI already lost Mom,â she whispered, her forehead touching their hands. âI canât lose you too.â
âDonât worry, my child.â Zenkichiâs inner voice was low. A flicker of light, a flame in Zenkichiâs heart rekindled. âYou wonât.
â âŠI promise you this until our dying breaths.â
