The Trump administration will require undocumented immigrants aged 14 and older to register with the federal government or face possible fines or prosecution. The US Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that under the “Protecting the American People Against Invasion” executive order signed by Donald Trump last month undocumented immigrants must also provide their fingerprints, while parents must ensure children under 14 are registered. The department will provide “evidence” of their registration and those 18 and over must carry that document at all times. The announcement comes as the US president has sought to harshly crackdown on immigration and implement a mass deportation campaign. Since taking office, his administration has attempted to suspend a refugee resettlement program (a judge blocked the cancellation), moved to cut off legal aid for immigrant kids (although it later walked back that decision), sought to allow immigration raids in schools and churches (another judge blocked such efforts in some houses of worship) and has begun sending undocumented immigrants to Guantánamo. Under the program announced this week, undocumented immigrants 14 and older in the US for 30 days or more will be required to register and undergo fingerprinting. Parents and guardians must register children under 14, and once children reach that age they must reapply and be fingerprinted, DHS said on its website. Those who do not comply can face criminal penalties, including misdemeanor prosecution, and fines. According to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the registry, undocumented immigrants will also be required to provide their home addresses and that failing to register could result in fines of up to $5,000 and six months in prison. The law has long been on the books, homeland security secretary Kristi Noem said in an interview on Fox News, but she will start enforcing it as the Trump administration seeks to use “every single tool at [its] disposal” to implement the president’s promised immigration crackdown. By registering, undocumented immigrants can avoid criminal charges and the federal government will “help them” return to their home country, allowing them to eventually return to the US, she said.

Migrants at a Miami immigration jail were shackled with their hands tied behind their backs and made to kneel to eat food from styrofoam plates “like dogs”, according to a report published on Monday into conditions at three overcrowded south Florida facilities. The incident at the downtown federal detention center is one of a succession of alleged abuses at lails operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (Ice) n the state since January, chronicled by the advocacy groups Human Rights Watch, Americans for Immigrant Justice, and Sanctuary of the South from interviews with detainees. Dozens of men had been packed into a holding cell for hours, the report said, and denied lunch until about 7pm. They remained shackled with the food on chairs in front of them.

“We had to eat like animals,” one detainee named Pedro said. Degrading treatment by guards is commonplace in all three jails, the groups say. At the Krome North service processing center in west Miami, female detainees were made to use toilets in full view of men being held there, and were denied access to gender-appropriate care, showers or adequate food. The jail was so far beyond capacity, some transferring detainees reported, that they were held for more than 24 hours in a bus in the parking lot. Men and women were confined together, and unshackled only when they needed to use the single toilet, which quickly became clogged. “The bus became disgusting. It was the type of toilet in which normally people only urinate but because we were on the bus for so long, and we were not permitted to leave it, others defecated in the toilet,” one man said. “Because of this, the whole bus smelled strongly of feces.”

When the group was finally admitted into the facility, they said, many spent up to 12 days crammed into a frigid intake room they christened la hielera – the ice box – with no bedding or warm clothing, sleeping instead on the cold concrete floor. There was so little space at Krome, and so many detainees, the report says, that every available room was used to hold new arrivals. “By the time I left, almost all the visitation rooms were full. A few were so full men couldn’t even sit, all had to stand,” Andrea, a female detainee, said.

At the third facility, the Broward transitional center in Pompano Beach, where a 44-year-old Haitian woman, Marie Ange Blaise, died in April, detainees said they were routinely denied adequate medical or psychological care.

Some suffered delayed treatment for injuries and chronic conditions, and dismissive or hostile responses from staff, the report said. In one alleged incident in April at the downtown Miami jail, staff turned off a surveillance camera and a “disturbance control team” brutalized detainees who were protesting about a lack of medical attention to one of their number who was coughing up blood. One detainee suffered a broken finger. All three facilities were severely overcrowded, the former detainees said, a contributory factor in Florida’s decision to quickly build the controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” jail in the Everglades intended to eventually hold up to 5,000 undocumented migrants awaiting deportation.

A report from Human Rights Watch reveals that migrants placed at three South Florida immigration detention facilities (aka concentration camps) were subjected to human rights abuses, such as being forced to eat like dogs while being handcuffed, denied basic medical care, and other abuses.

Canadians planning to travel to the United States may be affected by a new policy that would have them register if they are south of the border for more than 30 days. The policy came into effect under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) on March 9.

According to an executive order, called Protecting the American People Against Invasion, put in place on Jan. 20, U.S. President Donald Trump is cracking down on those heading to the U.S., including Canadians. The travel policy comes amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Canada, with on-again off-again tariffs on Canadian goods as well as Trump repeated comments about Canada becoming the 51st state. Although some details have yet to be shared by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) — such as the registration form and process — the agency has provided information about the requirements for Canadians and other foreign nationals with long-term travel plans. [...] It pertains to a section of the INA that says it is the duty of “every alien now or hereafter in the United States” who is 14 years or older and who is going to remain in the U.S. for 30 days or longer to “apply for registration and to be fingerprinted before the expiration of such thirty days.” It says that the text “contains those laws in effect on March 9, 2025.” “Registration is not an immigration status, and registration documentation does not establish employment authorization or any other right or benefit under the INA or any other U.S. law,” says the agency.
