Good day everyone and welcome to another edition of VGM Mondays. Today’s song is EXEC_Z from Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel. I was able to find a version with lyrics. The top section is the lyrics in English letters, the middle section when it shows has the lyrics in Hymmnos, the fictional language used in the Ar Tonelico series used by Reyvateils to create and use song magic, this song being one of them. The song is played during a certain boss fight when on the True End path. Music is a powerful force in the series so I thought a song from that series would be fitting for a post centered on video game music!

Something I found interesting about this song is that despite it’s techno dance beat, it’s actually a song about willfully offering oneself under subjugation. Read through the lyrics and you’ll see the singer chooses to transfer the free will of the Reyvateil species unto humans. Yeah, pretty twisted stuff. Music is a pretty interesting thing; the way it sounds can catch your attention and evoke certain feelings and when lyrics are involved, the way the song is interpreted to the listener can change.

I’ve heard of people giving themselves over to the music but not the music being the way one gives themselves to another. Ar Tonelico’s songs, the ones used by the Reyvateils, all have purpose whether it’s creating intense energy blasts in combat or powering ancient devices among other uses. The songs are hypnotic even if one hasn’t played the games (myself included) they’re worth a listen.
