A random person is checking you out!
I got a note the other day that someone who is not at all a good match was an outstanding match, so I set out to figure this out. I took a massive sample of the emails OkCupid's sent me so far. Of something approaching a year's worth:
Days with more than one: ~6
Days with two: 1
Days with three: 1
There doesn't seem to be any pattern to when they double up.
What else do I know?
Lowest match was 65%
Generally, match % was pretty high
There was one email almost every day
The time varied widely
It was not the first person to match over x% a day
Only about 3-5 days/month I wouldn't get a notification even though there were visitors, and often visitors with high match %s
I can find *no reason* why people are picked. There's some amount of magic (or hand-waving, if you'd prefer) at work here, but it's clearly bending to try and get one a day to me.
It feels like the only exceptional thing these matches share is that OkCupid picked them.
Does anyone else have thoughts on this?
