So I got a new job (a job I actually want). I’m super excited about it cause I’m finally putting my degree to use. Anywho, one of my male coworkers approaches me like, “I bet you know you’re pretty”. My response was to blush but then he finished by saying that I seemed conceited. Honestly, I was happy to hear that. *hard shrug*
In my past, I had a boyfriend who made me feel sooo damn ugly and average because of his eurocentric beauty standards. From 16 till about 21 I felt insecure about everything....my body and my hair specifically ... It bothers me when people tell me it’s hard to believe. That’s very flattering, but at one point in my life I was constantly reminded that my hair wasnt soft, my boobs are too small and my skin is too brown. I mean I grew up as like the girl next door or being gushed over by boys then I allowed this monster to tear me down to pieces. He would cheat on me with lighter skin girls, girls who were thicker than me, and girls who had 3c hair. My self esteem committed suicide when I got in a relationship with him. I wore a mask that I never took off and nobody knew. When I let him go at 19 the pain still lingered but I made a way out. He made me numb as fuck (some days I’m thankful for that) but I’m working on it still ! Sidebar- He’s literally a crackhead now so karmas a bitch lol.
So like with that being said, I’m glad someone perceives me to carry myself in such a way where I AM conceited. For ME it means growth. I’m glad I can see my self love is at a constant. <3
