The power of evolutionary design #DIY #CraftersU The fact of evolution doesn't only apply to nature, it can also be used for design and engineering!
Something has to give. Either we define "design" as the product of an intelligent designer of poems or cars, for instance, or we acknowledge that there can be design--genuine design--without an intelligent designer. Tradition and etymology might seem to favor the former course, but consider this: atom--from the Greek a [without] + tomos, from temnein, to cut or slice. Atom originally meant "unsplittable thing," but science discovered that splitting the atom, after all, was not a contradiction in terms. Science has also discovered, I submit, that design without a designer (lacking a designer with a mind, with foresight and intention) is not only possible but all around us. Design-by-evolution is a real, well understood process. It differs in interesting ways from design-by-engineer, but it is also deeply similar, capable of humbling "ingenuity."
Daniel Dennett. 2013. (Title: Intuition Pumps and Other Tools for Thinking)
Sacrificial Code Architecture
For many people throwing away a code base is a sign of failure, perhaps understandable given the inherent exploratory nature of software development, but still failure.
But often the best code you can write now is code you'll discard in a couple of years time.
—Martin Fowler
Valuable words about embracing a Sacrificial Architecture
neat article on evolutionary circuit design, with fgpas. as expected designs demonstrate lack of modularity in structure, and use of what would be unhelpful in usual human designs, e.g. exploiting signal crosstalk in this case. overly narrow response to environment is interesting also. would be nice if I could find more comments by the comp neuroscientist mentioned.
i "originally" got the article from here, apparently a site that helps people make those fucking email forwards. linking because it's still on the live web.
