Xanthoparmelia pulla

Ok look, I know you all probably prefer those lichens who are like, nice pastels or bright green or orange or whatever, but maybe we can all just take a moment to appreciate olive-brown buddies like X. pulla here? Because they’re still putting in the good work the other lichens do, they just maybe aren’t given nearly as much attention, and that is just unfair! This foliose lichen forms roundish patches up to 15 cm in diameter made up of thick, loose lobes. The surface is wrinkly, and that olive, red, or yellow-brown color appears glossy toward lobe tips.The apothecia can have a diameter up to 11 mm, have a flat or concave brow disc. X. pulla has a worldwide distribution, and has been recorded in Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and North America. It typically grows on exposed, siliceous rock is xeric (dry) habitats. There are some really cool papers which have been published lately documenting how the X. pulla group spread and diversified that I still haven’t read yet, but you should check them out here and here!
