Never The Same
The room was too bright too white too full of waiting
Time stretched thin monitors humming hands steady my heart louder than all of it
and then
a cry
not just a sound but a door kicked open inside my chest
They placed you in my arms like something sacred and impossibly small Seven pounds of forever ten fingers curled like you were already holding on
I had lived an entire life before that moment or so I thought
But when your eyes found mine clouded and new and unaware of gravity the world rearranged itself around your breathing
never the same
the air felt different heavier with promise lighter with fear every ordinary thing the clock ticking the nurse whispering the soft weight of a blanket became holy
I counted your fingers twice traced the curve of your ear as if memorizing a map I would need forever
You didn’t know what you had done to me how in a single breath you turned doubt into purpose turned “someday” into “now” turned me into someone braver
The world outside that room kept spinning cars passing people laughing storms rolling in
But inside everything stilled for the first time in my life
Never the same doesn’t mean broken it means remade
It means my heart now walks around outside my body with your name
and every step you take from this day forward will echo through me the first cry the first grip the first time you called me yours
The room was too bright too white too full of waiting
until you arrived and filled it with forever
