Disappearance

On the morning of September 20, 1988, Tara Calico left her New Mexico home to go on her customary bike ride. She told her mother to come and get her if she was not home by noon, just in case she had managed to get a flat tire, something she was familiar with in the past. Tara wasn't back by noon and her mother went searching for her daughter along her usual bike route, but could not find her or the bicycle and promptly contacted the police. Not far from Tara's home, police discovered a cassette tape that belonged to Tara in the dirt where she was riding with bike tracks nearby. Almost 20 miles further, they also found her Sony Walkman. Tara's mother fervently believed that Tara dropped them in an attempt to mark her trail. Several people have also spotted Tara riding her bike which has never been recovered. No one witnessed her presumed abduction, although a number of witnesses have observed a 1953 or 1954 Ford pickup pursuing her. It is unknown if the vehicle is connected to her disappearance, for all efforts to locate the pickup have failed.

The Photograph 

The case nearly went cold until a year later when a Polaroid photo was discovered in a Florida parking lot. The picture featured who was widely believed to be Tara bound and gagged alongside a young boy who resembled Michael Henley, who also inexplicably went missing from New Mexico in the same year as Tara. Despite much speculation, the identification of the boy in the photograph as Michael seems unlikely because his remains were later found not far from where he disappeared.

Her mother believed the woman in the photo was indeed her daughter due in part to what appeared to be a scar on her leg similar to one Tara had received in a car accident. Moreover, next to Tara rested a book by V.C. Andrews, which is said to be her favourite novel. Two other Polaroid photographs, possibly of Tara, have surfaced over the years, but they have yet to be released to the public.
