Is it normal to feel like reading books and watching movies is a chore? I'm clinically depressed and those two things used to be the only two things I liked doing. My finals ended three days ago and I'm on vacation now. I kinda want to just sleep all day but then feel guilty about neither studying nor enjoying myself
I mean itās normal to feel like things you enjoy doing are a chore when you have clinical depression? Thatās anhedonia, which sucks donkey balls.
But itās also not something to necessarily be accepted? Iām not a therapist, so Iām just talking from the perspective of someone who has clinical depression, and who lives with someone who has dysthymia. Which actually means nothing, because this is all gonna be anecdotal (okay, some of it is from reading books, and seeing therapists, but that was all catered to me, so yāknow, it all comes compressed through my scattered way of thinking things lol).
So please donāt listen to anything I say without like, researching it first, or seeing how you think about it, or talking to a professional about it.
Weāve found, for us, that itās important to keep doing things that we remember used to feel good, rather than just kind of giving up on everything and laying on our beds for all time, unstimulated and so on. In the same way that sometimes you have to sleep even if you donāt feel like it or donāt feel tired. In the same way that you have to eat even if you donāt want to. Sometimes you have to do things you remember feeling good, even when they wonāt feel good.
Itās not your fault if you donāt feel good while doing them. Sometimes you wonāt like food while eating it. Sometimes you wonāt want to go to bed when you do. Sometimes you hate your pills when youāre taking them. Itās not your fault for not feeling like going to bed, not feeling like eating, hating your pills - but not looking after yourself? That is something you have a measure of control over. Not like, āperfectly mentally healthyā levels of control. A measure. Enough. But enough control that youāre worrying about it anon and seeking some help for yourself even now, and trying to be responsibly self-caring. Enough control that you want to try and be good to yourself somehow, even if you donāt know how. <3
So doing those things and not feeling good is not like, a sign that those things will never feel good again. They probably will. It will probably happen on a day when youāre sure it will feel like crap. Itās worth rotating a lot of different things too. Video games you gave up on a while back, or fics you havenāt visited for five years, childrenās books and fairy tales, movies you always think āI keep meaning to watch that again but havenāt yet.ā Get some new stimulus happening. Even if it doesnāt feel great, and just feels like nothing, it will still be giving you something more than nothing at all.
But, also, if youāre in a place where nothing is feeling like anything at all, it may be time to seek professional help (if thatās possible) if you havenāt already. Sometimes knowing your diagnosis isnāt enough to fix whatās going on without someone to help out chemically or in other supportive ways. Anhedonia is a pretty big red flag in depression, so it may be time to consider other ways of supporting yourself too.
But, ALSO, dude, my dude, you just ended your finals three days ago! THREE DAYS AGO! Thatās no time at all! Youāre also probably still crashing from what must have been a prolonged period of stress, studying and general BLERGH that comes from finals! So firstly a huge congratulations that YOU DID IT (that you may not feel but thatās okay Iām still beaming them your way), and secondly, itās definitely normal to feel flat after youāve achieved something big that was stressful for a long time. So give yourself some time too. Keep going through the motions of self-care, and gently stimulating that (very tired) brain of yours, and give yourself some time to kind of just peace out for a bit.
Finally, if guilt is something that plagues you a lot, it can help to do this: āRight, on Monday, I am going to sleep the day away. Iām going to stay in bed, snoozing or dozing, as much as I can, and when I feel guilty Iām going to tell that to go away because I planned this. I planned this for that part of myself that seems to need it. Because itās planned for 24 hours, itās not just indulging the depression, itās an intentional act to see if it will help. On Tuesday, Iām going to try watching X movie and doing some stuff. Wednesday, Iām gonna try some studying. Thursday I think half a day should be for sleeping.ā
Plan that shit. Give yourself permission to make some space for it, instead of guilting yourself for not being whatever you think a person should be after finals are over.
Like, you can bet your ass when Iām super depressed Iāve scheduled two days in bed to not do very much except occasionally trawl the internet and feel sad about life. It may be useless for other people, but it actually really helps me to plan it, it sort of helps some sad part of me feel heard and listened to, and because itās planned, I can sort of reflect after those days like... āokay has anything changed.ā Sometimes things have. (Tbh, for me, on the second day I get really bored and Iām likeĀ āright I have to do somethingā not out of guilt, but just because the part of me that needed that got that). And if nothing has changed. Then itās time to also seek outside help. (This has also happened, that, my friend, is when I got put on Valdoxan, lol).
Thereās no rule saying you canāt lie in bed all day sometimes. And thereās no law saying that is always a bad or non self-caring thing to do. (And thereās definitely nothing saying you should be feeling guilty about that. You shouldnāt? Youāve just achieved/done a really taxing thing and youāre tired. Just about everyone - mentally healthy or not - is tired after finals and exams. Like, soul-tired. That shit is exhausting). But anyway, your mileage may strongly vary, and donāt do anything that pings as a Bad Thing, because my having whatever experience with my depression isnāt the same as me having any experience with yours. <3

Shows nowadays take themselves so seriously. Where are the musical episodes? The body swaps? The breaking of the 4th wall? I'm so tired of season finales being cliffhangers and high stakes, and episode after episode is emotionally charged and always escalating. Where are the goofy episodes as a break from action filled ones? Where is the magic??
