What am I doing here?
I was sitting on my couch one afternoon doing homework after school and realized I had forgotten a notebook I needed upstairs in my room. On my way upstairs I walked into the kitchen and grabbed a handful of pretzels, and then my mom asked me a few questions about my plans for the weekend. I answered her and then as I was walking upstairs my dad called me into my parents’ room to look at something on the computer. After I left their room I walked into the bathroom to get something out of my eye that was bothering me, and finally I made my way to my bedroom. There was a problem though. By the time I got there I had completely forgotten why I was trying to get there in the first place. It took me walking back downstairs and sitting on the couch to realize that my notebook was missing and to then go back upstairs and accomplish what I had intended to accomplish in the first place.
Have you ever done that? Or possibly something similar? Maybe you were working really hard on something and part of the way through you couldn’t remember why you were doing it in the first place.
Yesterday we talked about making every effort in our walk with the Lord. It is a common occurrence for Christians to forget why they are doing what they are doing and to get bogged down by Christian duties that they lose sight of their purpose. So, let’s answer the big question: Why are we making every effort? Why does all of this even matter? Here is how many Christians respond to efforts of faith: “I’m saved by grace and assured of eternal life. But now I have a lot of work to do in making myself better. God gets me in all on his own, but now it’s all up to me to become like Him.” Wrong. This is not Biblical truth. Your purpose of making every effort has nothing to do with maintaining your salvation; that has already been made secure through Christ. Your purpose of making every effort is not to prove that you really are a good Christian to your friends; because that means you are ultimately trying to glorify yourself rather than God. Glorifying God is your purpose. But here is the irony with that purpose: the only way you have the ability to glorify God is through what God has already done through Christ. On your own you do not have the ability to bring God glory. It’s crazy to think about. It is because of Christ that you are able to live out your purpose in life. Making every effort is difficult, but sometimes remembering why you’re making every effort is even harder.
