Dear Arlo,

I’m supposed to say important things when I write a letter to someone I love. If they’re struggling, I’m supposed to encourage them and tell them they can make it. But somehow I’ve forgotten how to do that.

So instead, the best I have is to tell you that yes, you can make it, but sometimes you don’t, and that’s okay. You absolutely can make it if you try hard enough, but sometimes “trying hard enough” means driving yourself to near death. I want you to succeed academically, but I also want to see you succeeding at just being you.
