Rebecca Yarros is not a good writer and I don’t know why so many people obsess over her. It’s just hot big guy and frail small girl with her. That’s why people like it because her storytelling skills suck. Sarah might not be a perfect writer but seeing people put Rebecca on the same skill level is so unbelievable to me.
I think RY had a really good idea for a duology at best, and whether it was her or her publishers ultimate decision, she's trying to take the material of two books and stretch it into five.
So much of the newer books in the series is just filler, it's roundabout and repetitive- you dont have to pay attention because the author will remind you about all of it in the next chapter, and the next, and the next, and the next- so you don't need to pay attention, make connections, like...it's all v lazy writing.
It's also clear this was rushed, and every book since has also been massively rushed. I've said it before, I'll say it again- not every book should be an 800 behemoth in a massive series. Like can we have a genuine conversation about who is/isn't Brandon Sanderson here?
And I know I'll be accused of misogyny AGAIN for saying this, but just a lot of these authors want the fame and fandom that, I think, people like GRRM and SJM has, but they don't want to do the work to obtain it, either. So you get things like Milo and their sloppy "book", you get disrespectful books that cost nearly $30 and barely advance the plot forward at all (but the author keeps getting to ride the popularity of their series until they obliterate what people like about it looking at you JLA), and a fandom that does all the work for the author so they never fade into obscurity or have to try a little harder to write something that makes sense.
