Vultures // Evanturetime & Linying feat. Charlie Lim

I am tremendously proud of how far the homies that rep my country have come in the past few months, with incredible releases hitting it big in the music world beyond the shores of the sunny island that Jump Into Limbo calls home. I've shamelessly made song requests for the DJ to play Myrne's remix of Gramatik's Native Son Prequel at halloween parties (they did not comply, but I insist that the onesie-filled dancefloor would've been much better off with a lil bit of that funky retro beat slinking up the subwoofers), and found people from across the globe who count Charlie Lim as one of their iTunes staples. Linying, the dream pop starlet in the making whom we spoke to earlier this year, released her debut album Paris 12 to much international blog acclaim, and jet-setted off on a European tour with "Shine" producer Felix Jaehn and is literally playing her first headline show in London as I write.

Vultures is an impeccable, brilliantly executed collaboration that wraps you up with a cosy but silken texture of layered emotions. There is a sense of calm, peppered with intrigue as the lyrical flow takes you on unexpected melodic twists, and the production swells with volume, emphasis and complexity. Linying's delicately intricate vocals lead but don't overwhelm, with hints at her ability to deal devastating emotional impact in the lightest of ways (I've not heard such manipulation since Only Girl's performance of Remains at St Barnabas Church). In contrast, Charlie Lim comes on as shy and ephemeral, his tonal quality diffusive in the lurch of Evanturetime's handicraft and the lyrics that Linying crafted (in retrospect, she says it was about some girl who talked smack about her - even though she'd intended to keep it unspecific and not delve too deep; guess there's the unavoidable subconscious delivery of emotion with art no matter what). Evanturetime, of course, is the real MVP here with the masterful synth curls, teardrop-like beats and an ear for balance that goes far beyond the future pop genre. Real name Evan Low, he has been playing live with Linying for a while now, and I wouldn't be surprised if he could sweep his hands through a laser harp to produce a little something magical.
