I really think more people who are against the use of generative ai/chatbots on moral grounds should see it as more equivalent to cocaine, except for a normier crowd. like, even a lot of people who ideologically oppose these tools have still come to rely on them for daily aspects of their functioning, there are entire support groups dedicated to helping people try to quit the use of chatbots, and so I think it's pretty fair to call them addictive at this point. cocaine is a blood drug, and the use of it is also directly linked to horrific violence and exploitation and all that jazz, but if you saw someone in your life doing coke, your first instinct shouldn't be to hit them with "how DARE you fund drug cartels that have the blood of MILLIONS on their hands", since you have a pretty safe basis on which to assume that this wouldn't place very high on the list of things they can bring themselves to give a shit about right now. reacting with moral outrage to people using addictive products that are first and formost harmful to their own psyches isn't the way, guys.
