Trauma!

Eustace: As a child, his entire village was wiped out by experimentation of a superweapon, Yama. Eustace survived because he had snuck off into the forest to take care of a baby wolf, but the blast still injured his right eye. As he came back to the village, he found his home, and his family turned to ashes. as he explored the ruins of the village, a damaged pillar fell on him. The wolf pushed him out of the way but was mortally wounded. after wandering the island with the wounded pup, he was found by a member of the Society, Ronan, who took him in. Eustace then grew up to become an agent of the society

Zane: Had to go through learning he's a robot, dying multiple times, losing people he cares about, memory loss, 40 years of being a tyrant, hacking attempts, you name it

he has such a great character arc. he grows and gradually opens up and befriends people and overcomes a lot of the issues he had due to his trauma
