Brachyopterus
Brachyopterus — рід евриптерид з родини Rhenopteridae. Це один з найдавніших відомих родів евриптерид, що був знайдений у відкладеннях середнього ордовика в Монтгомеріширі, Уельс. Хоча в минулому до нього відносили й інші види, сьогодні визнано, що Brachyopterus містить один дійсний вид — B. stubblefieldi.

Let's talk about sea scorpions on this #DayOfScience! These are a group of arthropods (insects, lobsters, shrimp) called the Eurypterida. These animals were aquatic, they lived in the oceans and more near shore environments. the largest recorded specimen was about 8 feet in length. The image shows several specimens from the #UMichPaleo collection - much smaller in size.
Similar to other arthropods, like cicadas, eurypterids would shed their exoskeletons (or molt) to grow. This means there is a higher chance of finding them in the fossil record - their end body and all of their molts increase their odds of being preserved in the fossil record.
These creatures had paddle like limbs, a long segmented body, and a skinny tail at the end - that looks similar to modern horse shoe crab tails. There was a study about twenty years ago that found fossilized eurypterid poop in the Ordovician rocks of Ohio. This poop contained fragments of trilobites and other eurypterids. Other poop samples have included jawless fish remains.
