Looking back, I drove to Death Valley first to start anew… to cleanse. I wasn't the only one with that idea. The first night, I camped on the open desert… the wind slapped warm waves across my body… sand would be in my scalp for months. The northern half of the hemisphere was dust, the southern half stars – the wind working it into a full dust dome. The spot wasn't perfect, but it was free, and I have a problem paying to camp on our Land – if one paid to camp every night, living on the Road would be as expensive as the City, so paying is out of the question. A fellow camper approached. His name was Eddie and he had a bottle of vodka. "Drink?" he asked. "Sure." Eddie was born in Lithuania and had a red star inked on his right wrist… he was 16 when the Iron Curtain fell. He was driving back from a wild weekend in Vegas, and chose the valley route home as a cleanser before his Monday morning university job. We talked until only the satellites could pierce the dust, and in the morning, just a wave before heading down our trails. Death Valley is the largest national park in the lower 48, and I spent many days ingesting the eerie ring of its silent landscapes. I never became truly comfortable in its silence, but wrote, "This is the longest I've ever spent away from a town. You know you came in from a state or town or some name on a map, but you forget which one. Today, I had to think hard to remember I'm still in California in the United States… could've been anywhere." (April '13)
