Presenting your paper and attending panels is only part of attending a conference.  Getting to know people over food, drinks and whilst sightseeing is a key part of the 'networking' process and of course good fun.

TECH REQUIREMENTS

All of the rooms where panels / keynotes will be presented will have PCs with projectors and speakers. 

Please, where possible save any AV resources into powerpoint and onto a USB memory ‘stick’.

We would be very grateful if you could make sure that you have transferred and checked your ppt in the room that you are presenting in before your panel.  Technicians will be on hand throughout the conference to help and support, but it is always best to know about any issues ASAP.

If you are using saved clips - remember that you need to make sure that the clip and hyperlink is saved within the USB version of the file, not your desktop. Otherwise the file will not be able to be found.  

If you are using web based clips, please check that they work and their quality on a projection screen in the room before you give your presentation.  It is usually best to open the clip and let it ‘buffer’ and then pause it. You can then just switch between your ppt and the clip using the alt/tab keys.

We would strongly recommend that you back your presentation up onto a service such as One Drive, iCloud or alternative ‘cloud’ storage.  If you are emailing the PPT to yourself, remember that lots of email providers implement a file upload limit.

If you need to bring a laptop with you, then if it is a mac, please make sure that you bring any relevant adapters that you might need with you (e.g Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter). If your battery life is short, bring your power supply with you too.

One of the best parts of any conference is getting to know other delegates over food and drinks.  Rather than having an official 'conference meal' in the evening, we are leaving it up to delegates to pick somewhere based on their own tastes and budgets.

From cafes, restaurants and bars, to grabbing food to create a picnic from a local supermarket, there are lots of choices in and around the Holborn area.

PAPERS

Panel presentations should be no longer than 20 mins.  

If you are writing your paper, 3,000 words should be your upper limit. Ideally, you should play it safe and aim for 2,750 (ish). If you are using clips, then you should cut your word limit accordingly.

Whether you are a post-graduate student or an experienced lecturer, please try to make sure that your paper is an engaging presentation. Try to avoid simply reading out an essay or an extract of a chapter / thesis.

Top tips for good presentations:

Keep to your allocated 20 minutes.

Have a clear structure and focus.  

Signpost throughout  - what specifically will you be focusing on? Make it explicit when you are approaching the conclusion.

Keep it simple, there is only so much you can do in 20 minutes.

Try to make lots of eye contact with a range of people in the audience. If you are too nervous to do that, at least try to look up and at a point at the back of the room.

Project your voice.

Slow down and try to speak as clearly as possible.

Drink water at intervals in your paper, to help slow yourself down and to make your speech clearer.

Vary your tone - think of yourself as an actor on the stage.

Convey your enthusiasm for the subject.  Think about how your body language can convey a presence.

Images always help to focus the audience’s attention, particularly if they are not familiar with the topic / texts that you are discussing.

Please make sure that you have practiced / timed your paper (including any clips).  In order to make sure that everyone gets equal time and there is time remaining for questions, chairs will be keeping all presenters to a strict time limit and will if needs be cut people short.

Conferences can be nerve racking for even the most seasoned academic, so please be nice, kind and supportive of all the presenters. Remember, as a European Popular Culture Association conference, many of our delegates will be presenting with English as their second language, so please be patient and understanding.

During the Q&A sessions at the end of each panel, try to ask short, focused and constructive questions.  If you want to chat for longer, then use breaks, lunchtime and the evenings to do so.

If you have a critical point to make about a paper, please think carefully and be considerate how and where you do it.  Please be sensitive, as a flippant or overly critical remark may squash someone’s confidence. 

The panels should mark the beginning, not the end of the conversations. We hope that the papers will spark a range of conversations at and beyond the conference.

We want EUPOP2014 to be a friendly, supportive and inspiring conference.  So, if you spot a delegate on their own, looking lost, or without anyone to talk to, please try and make the effort to chat to them.  They could be the most interesting person you’ve spoken to that day.

We are really excited about the fantastic and diverse range of papers covering film, TV, music, fashion, advertising, fandom, curation, politics, celebrity culture and digital media at EUPOP2014.  

We are hoping it will be an interesting, international and interdisciplinary conference, with scholars from the UK, Ireland, Europe, North America and New Zealand attending.

If you are travelling from outside of London, please remember that at the end of July, weather in the city is likely to be hot, sticky and very humid.  

Please pack accordingly and remember to stay well hydrated - particularly if you are travelling on public transport such as the London Underground!

EUPOP2014 will explore European popular culture in all its various forms. This may include European Film (past and present), Television, Music, Celebrity, The Body, Fashion, New Media, Comics and Popular Literature, Sport, Heritage, and Curation. The special streams will include themes such as Violence (Horror), Commodification of Popular Culture, Sport, Spirituality (the Occult), Nationalism and its Ideological Forms, Paganism (Celtic Studies, Nordic Mythologies), and Technology.
