According to a new report, the number of pushbacks in Europe has risen "sharply" in recent years to the point of becoming a "systematic" pra
The word "pushback" has entered the EU's lexicon along with hundreds of thousands of people who have sought asylum in the bloc since 2015. C
Lithuaniaâs government recently approved controversial legislation to formalise pushbacks as an official policy at the Belarus border.
The Lithuanian-Belarussian border is littered with the bodies of migrants, who have died trying to enter the EU, human rights groups have alleged. Sienos Grupe, a Lithuanian humanitarian organisation, has collected a list of around 30 people, whose families lost contact with them on Europeâs eastern frontier. The group is working hard to help loved ones find their missing relatives, piecing together information and grimly scouring refugee camps, hospitals and morgues. Much of what is happening slips under the radar, they say, as migrants and their families are often too scared to come forward, fearing a run-in with the law -- and the transience of people on the move makes it doubly difficult for them to seek help. 'No entry zone' Complicating their effort is the complete blackout by Lithuanian authorities in the border zone, which prevents humanitarian groups and journalists from monitoring the area. âThe problem is we simply don't knowâ, VakarÄ, a volunteer at Sienos Grupe who asked that we not use their full name, told Euronews. âThereâs this entire darkened invisible line that youâre not supposed to go pastâ. âNo-one knows what's happening insideâ. People crossing the border have also accused Polish border forces of dragging dead bodies to the Belarussian side, who simply bury the remains -- a claim strongly refuted by Poland. âMigrants are meaningless, faceless people to most, theyâre not even [considered as] human,â said VakarÄ. âNobodyâs very passionate about making sure their bodies aren't left to rot in the forestâ.

Thousands of children die or are harmed when fleeing for safety to and in Europe due to violent border control policies.
The situation on the EU's border with Belarus was high on the agenda as the management board of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) started a two-day meeting in Slovenia on Tuesday (21 September).
A new investigation purports to show scenes of Croatian authorities violently pushing back migrants outside European Union borders -- an unlawful practice under EU law.
The investigation was conducted by Lighthouse Reports, a collaborative journalism platform, with LibĂŠration, Der Spiegel and ARD.
In one video, a masked man deemed to be a Croatian police officer is seen beating up young asylum-seekers with a stick.
Reacting to the report, Jelena Sesar, Balkans Researcher at Amnesty International said it offered "the latest evidence that unlawful pushbacks and violence against asylum-seekers and migrants are commonplace at the EUâs external borders".
âWhile the officialsâ clothes are deliberately stripped of identifying insignia, it is clear that their uniforms, weapons and equipment are identical to those used exclusively by Croatiaâs special police, which has been notorious for conducting violent pushbacks for years now,â Sesar went on.
