States are fleeing the Great American State Fair and, well, wouldn’t you? So far, the event seems to be going about as well as the Freedom 250 concert, which is to say that people are running away from this hot mess as quickly as possible. The Trump administration took what should have been a nonpartisan celebration that states would have been eager to participate in and warped it into a gross celebration of President Donald Trump—conflating his own birthday with the birth of the nation.
There’s been a ton of slippage, a deliberate confusion, as to which events are official America 250 happenings and which are actually Freedom 250 events—the gross bribe-fueled Trump-centered affair. The tacky concert on the mall that collapsed? Freedom 250! The tacky Ultimate Fighting Championship cage match on the White House lawn? Not even Freedom 250—just a fun little for-profit fight! With a Freedom 250-spawned state fair set to include things like a replica of Trump’s totally illegal and totally gross arch, it isn’t really surprising that blue states are dropping out. Honestly, this sounds low rent as hell. Apparently, Freedom 250 paid for each pavilion and buildout, but states have to pay for decorations. According to CNN, at least five states are declining the opportunity to build a tacky little pavilion on the National Mall: Oregon, Washington, Massachusetts, Illinois, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. And NOTUS reported that Maine is out, and Maryland is uncommitted. Yes, states are out in part because this thing turned into a Trump jamboree, but Freedom 250 also made it stupidly expensive.
