♟ He is not going to pretend that he understands everything about Light Yagami. In fact, he finds him to be quite the enigma on some occasions. However, he is astute enough to know when something feels off or even worse when it is too quiet. It’s not like Light to keep so happily to himself without even so much as a comment or observation. The detective leans back in his swivel chair, stares for a moment and clears his throat. 

A specter stands over a bed that once upon a lifetime belonged to him, along with the auburn hair that spreads over the pillow, the rosy lips that part for those small, dainty intakes of air, the blood in his veins, the organs, the beating heart--all once his and no one else’s.

Light wants to slap him.

The twenty-eighth approaches and the fallen godling is in no mood to allow this fool boy his beauty sleep. In his ear, Light hisses a demand.

❝i just wished you a happy birthday. no need to get so upset,❞ he teased, fiddling with his dolls as he continued to speak over the phone--but of course there was a need for light to get upset, as he was KIRA, was he not?

❝besides, pessimism isn’t necessarily indicative of immaturity. in fact, if you got to know me, you might know that i also have great optimism. for example: i’m optimistic that i can catch you soon enough. perhaps it’s you who needs to grow out of your high school habit of being baited by detectives.❞

“Would you mind answering a few questions for me? It’s for a class project. I-if you’d like, I can even buy you tea or coffee afterward as thanks.”

She put the most polite ‘conversational’ expression on that she could muster. The questions were pertaining to a study of sorts, However, these questions were not of any importance to her academic studies. They were simply a means of collecting data.

♟ In his defense, he had been patient. It would be unfair to assume Raito-kun would adjust to his bizarre sleeping schedule, so there had been a time of night set aside for the momentous occasion of letting his suspect rest. He'd sit there with a laptop doing God knows what until daylight broke and he'd be free to drag his accomplice along for the business of the day. It was six a.m. now, a perfect time for a person to be rested up for questioning. Climbing over the side of the bed that was almost always left vacant, the detective gently pulled a thumb and forefinger's worth of Light's hair.

Normally, Light would sneer some insult at his younger self.

But tonight is a lonely night.

                   HIS  COMPANY’S  WORDS       reverberate  through  his  skull ,  and  for  a  moment ,  the  soft  realization  strikes  that  fear  is  one  emotion  he  can’t  help  but  feel  .   .   .  overly  acquainted  with .   across  the  intricate  spiderweb  of  memories  some  might  refer  to  as  ‘ his  life , ’  he’s  come  into  contact  with  his  fair  share  of  the  gruesomely  horrifying  -  in  no  minced  words ,  he’d  endured  that  which  would  drive  most  others  to  the  brink  of  insanity  time  and  time  again –

                    (  and  that’s  just  the  GUILT .  )

                    –  and  yet ,  HERE  he  remains  -  perhaps  not  necessarily  unscathed ,  but  .   .   .  alive .   alive ,  and  gangling ,  he  is  jagged  in  the  physical  way  that  his  body  appears  much  like  a  crumpled  marionette ,  and  vacant  in  the  emotional  way  that  he  no  longer  feels  any  fear  when  he  realizes  he  no  longer  recognizes  the  MONSTER  that  stares  back  at  himself  in  the  reflection  of  light’s  dark ,  auburn  eyes . 

                   ‘ most  lack  the  courage  required  for  introspection  .   .   .  ’       he  mumbles ,  finger  dragging  at  the  corner  of  his  lips  as  a  wide  gaze  blinks ,  not  un-corpselike  in  the  lifelessness  behind  pupils .
