I miss him too! I had a whole bit about a blizzard that I wrote and then Tumblr destroyed that I really want to get back to and write again. It involves Esteban and shows you how good Hope really is for him, compared and contrasted to his life with Ethan.

They have books I can borrow to go to school, and Deborah tutors me every week to get me through everything I missed, which is... Fifth grade and up. But I'm pretty good at history, she says, and I used to sneak Ethan's textbooks so I could read them, so some of it I know anyway." He hesitates, looking down at his hands. "I miss Ethan, though, a little. I hope he's not lonely."
so…esteban had leukemia, no? or was it something else?
Yeah, the implication in what Esteban says about his disease is that he had treatment-resistant childhood leukemia, specifically acute lymphoblastic leukemia. His enrollment in the WRU medicinal trials was meant to be part of a last-ditch effort to save his life.
WRU left some stuff out of their explanations. Esteban's parents believe he wrote them letters, although he never did, and that the treatment eventually failed. WRU kept him and the other successful trial enrollees at a hidden facility disguised as a ranch/summer camp in Wyoming to study long-term effects.
They found Reviverol not only successfully treated multiple severe childhood cancers, but also that those who were given the drug were less prone to infection afterward, too.
Esteban does not know it, but he and his fellow trial recipients are some of the healthiest people in the world.

Yesterday I wrote an entire thing with Esteban meeting Juliet (from a couple of Jameson pieces) and then LOST IT and just like lost my groove on esteban. But I want to write more! Suffice to say, one clue is that he was handed over voluntarily by his family, who felt they saved his life in the process.

How’s Esteban holding up in Hope? He’s one of my favs(I’m so curious about his backstory)and for the first time I’m so torn between wanting to see one of your characters happy and wanting to see them SUFFER😭😭(I normally always want them safe and well). He’ll turn me into a real whumper yet

Leslie absentmindedly saying “horses” on the trip to hope when she sees a field of them (as is mandatory) and turns only to see Esteban, facing pressed against the window, staring wide eyed. That is all.
There's a rest area in Kentucky with a big gold horse sculpture (two, actually) and I am picturing Esteban excitedly asking Leslie to take a photo of him with the statue. And then it's the first photo of him ever taken.
