The Santa CompaƱa is a procession of the dead in the beliefs of the Iberian Peninsula. It is led by a living person who carries a cross or cauldron of holy water, followed by a host of spirits in white, hooded cloaks who carry candles.
The Santa CompaƱa appears at midnight, travelling the village paths of a particular parish. The spirits are not always seen, but can be identified by the smell of melted wax and the supernaturally compelled parishioner who leads the parade. The procession ends at daybreak, and the living person returns to their home with no memory of their participation.
