I love eating ramen, but it’s not something that I can do every day. Even with all the new Japanese ramen places that have sprouted around the metro, spending P500 or more on a bowl of ramen is not exactly what you can call affordable. But what if I told you that you can now enjoy an authentic bowl of ramen for only P180? Sounds impossible, right? Not anymore, because Hakata Ton-ichi is now open to give ramen enthusiasts a wonderful alternative.
Hakata Ton-ichi opened its doors last June 22, 2019 at the new Japan Town on the fourth floor of Glorietta 2 in Makati. This entire section is dedication to all things Japanese, with several Japanese restaurants ready to serve our favorite dishes. So far, Hakata Ton-ichi seems to be drawing most of the crowds, not just because of its authentic ramen, but also because of its very friendly prices.
The restaurant comes with a colorful modern Asian vibe. The interiors are playful, but with that Japanese feel to complement its dishes. Hakata Ton-ichi was made for the working class folks who want to have great tasting ramen, not as a luxury, but as comfort food after a long tiring day. This is why the place is always packed with hungry Makati diners even if it had just opened a few weeks ago.Â
Hakata Ton-ichi is a local franchise, but they partnered with a Japanese ramen chef to ensure that their ramen are guaranteed authentic. This is how they can offer affordable prices without sacrificing on the quality.
The star of the show is their Ton-Ichi Ramen (P180). That price is not a typo. This is their essential ramen made with Ton-ichi broth, oil, and chashu pork. It is also topped with onion leeks, kikurage, and a perfectly cooked tamago. The broth is flavorful with just the right amount of richness that you can actually eat it every day without feeling too guilty.
If you are a bit hungry, upgrade your order to the Essential Ramen Set (P320) to include fried rice, fruits, and a glass of iced tea. Filipinos love rice so why not eat it with your ramen, right? This will surely fill you up quickly. Choose from among Hakata Fried Rice, Black Fried Rice, Red Fried Rice, or Curry Rice.
But the best option to get is the Hakata King’s Set (P500) which comes with your choice of ramen, Hakata Fried Rice, salad or sushi, a side dish, mixed fruits and iced tea. P500 will only get you a bowl of ramen in other restaurants, but here at Hakata Ton-ichi, you get a complete set that can even be good enough for two persons!
The Hakata King’s Set comes with a choice of salad or sushi. You can order the Potato Salad or the Hakata Salad, but if you prefer sushi you can choose the Sunny California Roll, or the Teriyaki Pork Roll.
Then you also get a side dish as well. Choose between the Gyoza or Chicken Karaage. The crunchy karaage actually goes well with the fried rice, if you still have room to handle it.
For those who like their ramen spicy, order the Red Ramen (P220) instead. This bowl comes with a special red oil mixed with Ton-ichi broth and chashu pork. It is also topped with onion leeks, kikurage and tamago. It’s not extremely spicy, but made just right so most diners will get to enjoy it.
You can also have it with the Hakata King’s Set which is a better value. Other ramen choices you can get with the set include the Black Ramen which is enriched with savoury squid ink. Then there is the Miso-ichi Ramen which comes with the complex flavors of miso tare.
They also have some curry rice bowls on the menu. The Cheeseburg Curry Rice (P280)Â has a hamburger pork patty over a bed of white rice doused with their special Japanese curry sauce.Â
Another option is the Ebi Katsu Curry Rice (P290) with its fresh white shrimp fried with panko bread crumbs over rice. This is supposed to be three pieces but the owner was too excited and ate one piece already. Hakata Ton-ichi also has another branch that just opened in SM City North EDSA, so I’m definitely giving that a visit when I come back home from London next month.See you soon!
