“How does she look at all those screens at the same time?” Castle asked as he sat in the seat beside Beckett’s desk, he along with Esposito and Ryan watched you from across the pen, you were oblivious. Headphones on, eyes staring carefully at the screens in front of you, behind the blue-light glasses perched on your nose, fingers tapping away at the bright pink backlit keyboard.
“I don’t know,” Ryan muttered. “I get headaches when I look at my phone for too long. Jenny says I should limit my screen time.”
“Does she realize it’s half an hour past clock out time?” Javier asked as you grabbed something from the printer located beneath your desk without looking away from the screen.
“Y/n always stays late,” Beckett replied, finally coming out of the captain’s office, bag slung over her arm ready to leave. “She says it's easier to work when the place is nearly empty.”
“I think it’s just easier to work when Javi isn’t hovering around,” As if proving his partner’s point, Esposito had pushed out of his chair and was moving towards your little corner office. “Proving my point right there,” Ryan grinned as Esposito threw him a middle finger over his shoulder without breaking his stride. “You’re wasting your time bro!” he called over but Esposito ignored him, tapping a quick knock on your office door with a smile.
“Hey, you clocking out?” he asked. You only glanced over your shoulder briefly, slid one of the headphones off of your ear and shook your head.
“No can do, I’m only halfway through these texts from your Vic. Wanna get them done so I can start scanning her social medias tomorrow.” Your eyes flickered across the screens carefully sliding over each message that popped up. “Luckily this isn’t taking too long. Text speak. WTF, SMH, LOL, that’s my kind of language.”
“Come on, you gotta eat. Pizzas on me.” he offered, leaning against the side of your desk.
“Can’t you see I’m busy?” you replied, rolling your eyes. “Shit.” you muttered glancing at one of the messages from an unknown number. You quickly tapped on your keyboard, typing in codes which Esposito could only dream of understanding. Then a name popped up. “Mary Shenice ring a bell?” you asked.
“Yeah, she’s the Vic’s mom. She text that?” he added and tapped the screen where the message was. “Where’s the link go?”
“That detective, is my next job. Safe link search. I’ll check for bugs first.” Just as you start typing, you feel the slow breath of Esposito behind you breathing down your neck. Your hands freeze as one of his arms reaches over the desk to poke your soft, pink wrist rest attached to the mouse pad. You twisted your head to the side to raise an eyebrow and he retracted his hand slowly.
“Sorry,” he whispered. You returned to your screens, scanning the link with a malware software before opening the link in a separate safe search browser. Just as you are about to click search, a pen pot to your right tips over. You turn again to see Esposito in the centre of the crime scene holding the fluffy pink pen Beckett had brought you when you moved into the bigger office as a house-warming gift. His chocolate eyes wide as he slowly placed the pen down and gathered the stationary that had tipped across your desk.
“Do you not have somewhere else to be, detective? Somewhere that isn’t breathing down my neck or destroying my office?” You pursed your lips as he smirked back at you.
“What? You’re just too cute to leave alone.” Your glare dissolved as you shook your head fighting a smile, the warmth flooding your cheeks. “Alright, look, I’ll leave you to your cave. But I’m gonna get you to come out one of these days, just wait and see.” He threw you another smirk and backed out of the office, meeting with Ryan on the way and sending a little wave as he clocked out.
You were in big trouble.
The link you had safely searched had ended up being the key to the entire case. The mother had sent it blindsided not realizing it released a tracking virus on the daughters phone and that was how the violent ex had found her location despite all of the safety measures she had put in place to protect herself. It was an innocent mistake which had cost a young woman her life. Something the mother would never forgive herself for. It was bittersweet.
You had just finished handing in the print outs to the basement gremlins to file away when you returned to your office. It may have taken some long nights and a lot of digging, but finding the coding in the message had cracked the case and put the asshole behind bars for a long time, there was no way his lawyer was getting him out of this one, your coding knowledge made a solid foundation for the murder charge.
As you shuffled closer to your computer screens, your eyes focused in on the bright pink sticky note stuck to the corner of the screen, scribbled on with somewhat messy handwriting.
Dinner? With fewer wires and more flirting? - J You pulled it off of your screen and rolled your eyes with a gentle smile. You glanced at the clock on the wall. 7:48. Way past your clock out time. You were hungry, but it was quite late. Would Esposito even eat this late? Your mind wandered to the screens in front of you. Now would be the perfect time to take another look over the coding for the safe search ready for the next case, your firewall could do with some updating too… The note in your hand crumpled against your palm. You noticed some writing on the back.
Case is closed. No excuses. You know where to find me. - J
Using police equipment to find an off-duty detective wasn’t technically against the rules. Although you had used the system for your own personal gain which was probably frowned upon. It was a good thing your firewall deleted all traces of searches made when you didn’t actively save them. The taco stand was sandwiched between a laundromat and a gym, probably the perfect place for it to be seen as it would gain traffic from both the exhausted and starving gym goers as well as the people waiting for their washing to finish. It was Esposito’s favourite take out spot, mainly because it was a family owned stand and because you got to choose the level of spice that best suited you. It was also the home of the famous Ghost Taco, which included assorted peppers including Ghost Pepper slices.
Peeking across the crowd, your eyes searched for the familiar face. You wouldn’t admit that your heart paused as you searched, you wouldn’t admit the little pounding of fear in your chest that you had missed your chance. But as the detective stepped away from the curb and appeared through the walking civilians, your chest warmed.
“Didn’t think you were going to show,” he admitted with a smile. “Figured you’d be neck deep in some wiring or coding issue by now.” Your heart fluttered. This was the same Esposito that you saw at work, a little rough around the edges but with a good heart and you kicked yourself for not joining him for dinner sooner.
“Turns out you’re just too charming to leave alone.” You teased. Esposito grinned and chuckled.
“Shall we?” He gestured to the taco stand. You step forward with him and order your tacos, thanking the owner kindly and walking down the sidewalk with Esposito.
The two of you walked along the darkened city streets. Despite the late hour, the entire city seemed to be awake. Clubs blasting loud music, people laughing as they walked along with their friends, it was the double life of New York City and you loved it. You joined in on the strangers’ laughter as Esposito explained in detail how he and Ryan had gotten caught in a drag show and ended up needing to dress up to blend in on a case.
“I have to ask,” you began as the two of you turned onto the street of your apartment. “Why’d you keep asking? What if I kept saying no?” Esposito’s eyes scanned you as he smiled.
“Some things are worth the wait.”
