Video: Bicyclist escapes Santa Rosa fire hauling 70-pound dog on her back
SANTA ROSA (KRON) — A 24-year-old woman escaped the Santa Rosa wildfire by bicycle, all while hauling her 70-pound pit bull on her back.
Around 2:00 a.m. Monday, Natasha Wallace was driving home from studying at Santa Rosa Junior College when she realized her Coffey Park neighborhood was on fire.
She instantly thought of her 4-year-old dog, Bentley.
Wallace shoved him in the car and took off down the road.
Within minutes she was stuck among the frantically fleeing cars with fire close behind.
“It was coming faster than I could leave in traffic, so I went back and got my bike,” she said.
She also grabbed her duffel bag, which she turned into a makeshift sidecar for Bentley.
“So I grabbed my dog and I told him, ‘Hey man this is serious, you need to just sit in the bag.’ And he, he hopped right in,” Wallace said.
After making it a few miles down the road, Wallace says a truck driver pulled over and gave them a ride the rest of the way.
“I just want to say thank you to him. Paul Johnson,” she said.
Thursday night, Wallace was reflecting on how lucky she was, not only to have survived the fire, but to have people around to help.
Although everything she owned is gone, she still feels a strong sense of gratitude.
“I don`t even know how to express how grateful I am.”

Escaping fire
I have a lot of friends that are going though difficult times right now. Their problems range from unemployment, relationships, death of a loved one, working to hard and feeling miserable, and moving away from loved ones. Listening to my friends and the hard times that they are enduring, made me thing of what smoke jumpers do in Forrest fires. Quick thinking smoke jumpers in the middle of a raging fire will light what is called escape fires when they will stand in a middle of field and light a fire around them to burn all the fuel around them. They do this so that when the fire get closer to them they will be safe since there is not fuel for the fire to grow. The reason why I think of smoke jumpers and my friends issues, is because I want them to think of themselves as smoke jumpers and how they have to set those escape fires. As in get rid of the bad things in their lives that is weighing on them, such as end that relationship that is making you feel horrible about yourself, quit the job that makes you feel like shut every time you walk in, and stop feeling as you aren't good enough because you haven't found what you are meant to do yet in life. Once you light your escape fire I promise you that the raging Forrest behind you will stay behind you.
A reason I don't like doctors
The third leading cause of death in the United States is medical error/infections acquired in hospitals.
I have to watch Escape Fire for a class and the Americans that follow me should really check it out. It's a documentary about the American health care system.
